he came realitively close to pr’ing, 3 guys dipped 9.9, asafa wasn’t a 9.8 guy at the time so it’s hard to say “well he shoulda been up there with them” esp with this obvious missed taper leading one to think that he perhaps missed his peak at athens as well, sure he was picked to win, but so was someone else when beamon jumped 8.9.
athens wasn’t a choke, the FS in 2003 can be chalked up to “shit happens”. 2005 he was hurt, 2006 he won all his races, comms training through ect, 2007, missed taper, still got beaten into bronze. 2008, with the olympics being basicly the last meet of the year, will be, baring injury, AP’s chance to prove he’s not a choker.
the book is still open on powell, he’s what 24/25, and has only had 3 years where he was the top guy(05,06,07), 05 he was hurt, 06 no global champs and 07 we have this little taper issue to go along with tyson gay being an awesome runner.
next year with the olympics in september and gays coach out of jail both guys should be firing flat out and if powell still can’t get gold…
With regards to the weight loss though, you think that is a normally attainable level of loss? Even seeing him from the relay he doesn’t look anywhere near that lean and the race was only a week before the WR. I assume he was resting for a lot of that week as well.
Here is the breakdown for Walter Dix’s collegiate season:
Indoor:
55/60m: 7
200m: 6
4x400: 1? (maybe 2)
Outdoor: I’ll edit this when I can find more info (FSU’s site is not updated for the outdoor season stats) but he ran in no less than 8 meets. Their team had 11 weekends on schedule for meets. You can imagine, prelims/finals/relays, what this schedule was like.
Stephanie, on the occasion of the Osaka 100m final, the following max velocity was reached by the medallists at the specific point of the race as follows. . .
Men’s 100m Final:
Top speed : Gay 11.83m/s at 65m, Atkins 11.74m/s at 55m, Powell 11.79m/s at 55m
Another problem is cropping up. The Meet in Brussels.
What should Asafa do in that case? He just ran the fastest two races on one day ever and has a very short time to recover before this race and it can be bloody cold there this time of year as well. I think it very likely that Tyson will not race him because there isn’t enough time to get the money together but Atkins might be recovered from Osaka by then- he was in Zurich but was too bagged to run there apparently.
I don’t know how far I want to carry this discussion about the situation in Brussels but an athlete I dealt with was told that if he/she ran there the “time would be great”. This person was very puzzled by this remark but was injured and didn’t run but others who did run recorded times they didn’t equal anywhere else fro years.
That said, Asafa might want to stay in the 100 to keep that “opportunity” from happening for Tyson in his specialty. Watch for Tyson’s time in the 200 in that case (unless my big mouth stirs up too much crap!)
If Tyson wasn’t an issue would it be best for AP to run a 200m in his next meet? My reason for making such a suggestion is due to the lessor CNS stress experienced in the deuce.
But will his coach take heed or just keep on ploughing the fields with Asafa? Lets hope that they read this forum and take the necessary actions. No disrespect to the Americans but its good for the sport to have a 100m maestro who is not American…
The program is fine, it’s the duration of each phase and/or the number of competitions to compensate for the duration that is at issue IMO. Things are very close indeed as I think it can be seen. We’re struggling to get the graphs up that we created- there’s some sort of issue with the new version of the site we need to fix. Stay tuned!! I hope it can make things a lot clearer.
