Are Powell, Bolt, and Gay faster than Ben Johnson at his peak?

Yeah, that’s why I put Ben at 2 instead of any of the great '90s sprinters. I think Mo was incredible but 9.79 in 1988 still boggles my mind.

I’ve only seen two clips of Hayes on a track, so I guess that’s just off of legend and how incredible that relay leg looks.

But Bolt today just destroyed everything. My favorite part is that he wasn’t even interested in the time, he was so happy that he had the gold that he just went nuts with 30 meters to go.
I’m guessing that sans celebration, he was at 9.63 or 9.62 today. Thoughts?

And with a wind behind him?..disgusting.

Ben and Bolt no fucking doubt.

But I have Ben Johnson if it’s a 55/60m race over Bolt. I mean Ben’s 40 yard dash time was under 4 seconds!!!

With a tailwind of +1.8 and no celebration/shut-down, that would have been a record in the same magnitude of 19.32 and 10.49. What he just did can only be truly understood by track fans.

It already IS of that magnitude.

this thread is stupid…

why are we comparing anyone with Ben Johnson?

A 9.6 with a shut down + 0m/s wind is DEFINITELY in that magnitude.

ya i dont believe you can really compare athletes of different eras…in any sport being…

thats like for hockey fans comparing terry sawchuk with patrick roy.

I partially disagree. I think the performance is of a similar magnitude, but the time isn’t. Bolt lowered his own record by 0.03.

Johnson took off 0.34 his own record, which we should cut in half to 0.17, due to the race being twice the length.

Flo-Jo took off 0.27 from Ashford.

If we play imagination games, and give him 0.1 for the celebration, and 0.1 for a tailwind. This puts him at 9.49. That is within the realm of possibility. That would have resulted in him reducing the record by 0.23 - right in there with 0.17 of MJ and 0.27 of Flo-Jo.

Doesn’t matter what you broke the record by- it’s how good it is. The math on 9.69 wortks out to 19.04

Question for me is does he hit 13m/s? How much speed endurance do you need when you can cruise to 12m/s and then bring it home?

Are you using a formula, or IAAF scoring tables?

no. nat at all. This isn’t a “likely to win” description. This is a coaches’ calculation for what a 100m performance should allow you to do in the 200m. The standard rule is 2 x 100m performance BUT that’s a hand timed calculation, so you must convert to hand time and add back the electric at the end. Allowing a very very modest adjustment for the celebration, subtract .24 from 9.64 and you get 9.4 x 2 = 18.8 . add back the .24 and you get 19.04.

Charlie, what do you think he would have run if he hadn’t shut down so early? Your opinion? Do you think he could run under 9,60?

Personally I see the 200m WR falling after the olympics and after some rest. The rounds of the 100 and the post race media (if his coaches didn’t keep him away from that) will effect his 200. We’ll have to settle for a lack lust 19.48 :frowning: :stuck_out_tongue:

See the splits posted by PJ on the thread 9.69 and my answer. With the same R/T it’s 9.64 to 9/63 and with an ideal R/T maybe 9.60. but remember, he’s not done yet- he’s only 21.

CF do you think BJ body style could match up with Bolt body style (height)? I think the day of the 5’10 sprinter is gone bye bye, its very diffcult to match bolt levers esp at 60m+.

Agreed. He was there to win gold and have good time knowing he was ready for it. Once you know you are “invincible” you can do anything you want. He has proven it in the second part of the race running with his spikes undone!

Let’s not forget - this was his …what…10th pro 100m race?

I went to bed after 3am and got up at 7am thinking of this race. Even during my sleep I could not stop dreaming about it!

Damn! Can’t stop thinking of his true potential. I hope they have those legs wrapped up and in a cotton box. Think what happened to Gay after the 100m at US Trials. RECOVERY time for Bolt! Let’s settle down. Wow.

Bolt looked to the naked eye to still accelerating at 60m mark, IAAF date will be very interesting.

check the 9.69 thread for PJs splits.

A day ago you felt Bolt couldn’t beat the shorter Tyson but now that Tyson is clearly still not 100%, a new theory evolves. When Ben ran, people argues that taller runners stood no chance over the 100m. View each case on it’s own merits. I have no way to predict where Bolt will take things nor do I have any idea what some future even faster guy will look like.
