Antioxidants are Special

I stopped taking vitamins B, C, E and beta carotene for about a month to see what would happen. The results weren’t pretty. I was getting sick, tired and I would get all sorts of annoying injuries. After I figured out it was because of this, I started taking the vitamins again. Now I feel a hell of alot better and I would say it’s nothing short of remarkable.

During my speed session I felt more alert and ready to train. It felt like a walk in the park compared to previous sessions. During my tempo runs it was like I was on cruise control. Fatigue didn’t build up the way it did previously. It is fairly obvious that athletes need above and beyond the nutritional requirements that sedentary individuals need. This is the first time I could actually see a notable difference.

Here’s what I’m taking btw:

B-complex x 2
Vit C 2000mg
Vit E 2,000 IU
Beta carotene 80,000 IU

be careful with the beta-carotene.too many and you’ll end up looking like an umpaa-lumpaa from charlies chocolate factory.is this an anti-oxident(B-Car)??

i think, from memory of yrs ago, that beta cat, turns into Vit E? Beta Cat is pretty harmless, but too much Vit E can be harmfull. Taking Beta Cat, your body only converts what it needs, and leaves the rest unchanged, hence preventing over use.
I think its Vit E it turns into, i will double check.

I think blinky is right, i too went off my Vit pills, and started suffering big time. Doing a major training sesson such as the Spp, i went off my Vit, dont really know why either? I been generally on Vit for yrs now.

do guys take these in addition to a multivitamin and a good diet?? is there any risk of ODing on some of these antioxidants if you already ahve ahealthy diet with a multivatim supp?

Omyss-

Most of the anti-Oxidants Blinky listed are water soluable vitamins (B-complex, C), which means you can take in plenty and really not see any adverse effects. However with the fat soluable vitamins (beta-carotene and Vit e), there have been studies claiming TOO much could be bad; then again, TOO much of any good thing isn’t going to help.

I wouldn’t worry about it very much as long as YOU think you are getting enough through your diet and multi, but if needed than an additional 500-1000 mg of C, a B complex 1-2x per day, and 400-800 I.U. of E per day shouldn’t hurt on top of what else you’re doing. Look at it as an insurance policy; you’re just doing the little extras to protect yourself in the long run instead or running the risk of maybe a possibly deficiency. Hope that helped Omyss.

When considering RDA recommended intakes, understand that athletes put their bodies through extreme circumstances. The muscle damage and repair is extensive compared to sedentary individuals. This would make it alot harder to overdose because intake levels would have to be awfully high.

I think thats vitamin A you are thinking of(what beta carotene turns into). But yeah same idea. Some extra is good and healthy for you, too much is bad.(Unless you find orange tinted skin appealling. whatever floats ur boat. lol)

if you like reading heres a useful link-http://www.bodyomics.com/page2_vitamin_breakdown.html

i’m looking for a link that explains the uses of specific vitamins and side effects if overused.

Check out the symptoms of a zinc overdose. How funny would it be to watch someone with all those symptoms?
