frames 5 & 6 just don’t look right to me, looks more like an 800m form.
You have to follow a rythem dictated by the power available so power dictates much of what you see.
Given what PJ has said about how fast Gay ran the curve and the fact that Gay was using this race as a test of where he was in fitness, I wonder if maybe they had a strategy of run the curve hard, then coast.
But there seems to be an epidemic these days of elite athletes who want to claim they haven’t done any speed work, including Gay.
Maybe Gay looked like an 800 runner to you because he’s been training like one?
lkh, check p. 108 and Charlie’s post #1608 in this thread.
But wouldn’t there be more power if 5 & 6 just were not there

Borzov’s start:
super sequence Borzov. Boy he was tough in Munich 72, so self-assured and in control of the show.
As This thread began with analising Matt Shirvington.Has he officially retired?
On Borzov’s start, note the action of the left hand - perfect “flick” with the elbow out to the side. However, he looks a bit hunched over if frames 4, 5, 6, and 7, no?
Also, elbow is bent and out by everyone in post #1667 -the shortest and quickest way to get that first hand there, as per Charlie’s comments.
