THIS TENDS TO SUGGEST THAT NEW TRACK IN OSAKA IS WORTH MORE THAN 1/10TH SEC PER 100M. I REALISE THAT ATMOSPHERICS ETC ALL COME INTO PLAY, BUT 44.02 IN JAPAN TO 44.60 NEXT UP AT HOME IN THE US IS A FAIRLY BIG REGRESSION ON THE CLOCK.

What sort of impact do you believe the wider turns in Osaka had?
I remember reading the straights were closer to 80m with long sweeping bends which means they arent as tight.
I thought everyone would go off their tooting heads at Gay’s time. I’d say Asafa better hand the plaque over now, Gay is gonna be running away from him over the next few seasons, unless he’s already hit his peak - I so seriously doubt. And that 200m record could be his to soon. That would be something special. I know i’m jumping to conclusions quickly, but that’s an impressive time and someone said he mildly eased up and its only 0.5-0.9? over the wind for Powell’s WR, and I doubt he’s peaked for the season yet unless he’s crazy or something. Geez, that was a mouthful.
Dissappointing times in the 400
and does anyone know whats up with steffenson? Someone else asked but I havn’t heard an answer.
Well done Nick Willis. He recently recovered form a stress fracture. Hopefully breaks his NZ record and challenge for a medal at WC.
PB for Dwight Phillips? Still should concentrate on LJ unless he’s satisfied for purely vying for bronze, cause he has no realistic chance with Powell and Gay there to win WC.
Decent 200, particularly for Merritt, as I heard someone say, that speed’s gonna allow him to really pressure Wariner. Wariner had better break 20 soon, otherwise he could be left behind.
400’s were a shocker (I know, i’ve said it already, but I had to say it again).
i wouldnt jump too much, its actually 1.5 m/s over asafas last WR. if it was wind legal i wouldve crapped my pants, though if anyone has splits id be interested in seeing them. it would be sweet to see a 100/200 WR double though. asafa is pretty young too though so well see.
yeh fair enough. I was just taken by the moment, I mean, 9.79 is moving, even with a 2.5 tailwind. He’s at the pinnacle though, no matter what, but you’re right, Asafa’s still there too, just we havn’t heard a peep (competiton) out of Powell this year (other then a 400m which was for all purposes for ‘strength’ building-you’d hope so at 47.xx)
And after thinking about it more, Wariner SO NEEDS that sub 20 clocking. I can’t see him being beaten this year, though Merritt and X-man (if he gets into top form again) could throw down surprises, but over the next couple of years he’ll lose his crown unless he improves his top-end speed.
I want to see him keep winning, so damn, he’d better drop into 19.8/19.9 soon. Real soon.
Re:Phillips. It’s possible he is just using these 100’s for developmental purposes. He’s likely getting in races in order to get a competitive opportunity with which to sharpen up or help to contribute to his speed development for the long jump.
Also, he has run a 6.53 for 60m and between 10.10 to 10.15 legal(I don’t recall exactly) so he certainly belongs in one of two such heats. Still, I doubt he thinks he is going to make the U.S. w.c. team in the 100m.
But compare the 100 times in Osaka. they were slow there. Good winds for the 100 screw up the 400m guys with the wind in their faces on the backstretch where they need to make the time.
Charlie, what do you think about Greene’s performance? I can’t image that he didn’t know what kind of shape he was in. 10,84 is a turtle time for man like him…
I’ve read 1 or 2 articles on IAAF that have Phillips saying he wants to double at worlds this year and go home with a medal, preferably gold. You could find them in the archives a while back.
