Activation sessions day before competitions

Yes, they were at UT-Austin, not in Stockton…

They’ve tested the surface, it’s not far off Mondo. Don’t be fooled, this is one high tech warehouse. High speed cameras, light gates etc!!

The facility is relatively new and he doesn’t train as many sprinters anymore–mostly jumpers and specifically pole vaulters.

Exactly - tis what i was getting at before.

If using weights right before a semi or heats etc was so popular, it would be more heard of.

Perhaps too many have heard of the “BJ squat routine” too much and try it out themselfs.

Imagine if Asafa relied on squats also, turns up to China and there are no squat racks within 15min of the track…

But hey - if nations only send athletes that are top 16 or better in the world - then only Semi and Final will be there, perhaps you might have to take your own dumbbells with you if no on site gym exists.

Either way you slice it the fact remains that Donovan DID use 8x1 heavy cleans after his quarterfinal and proceeded to win Olympic gold and break the WR in the process. This is history, it is not debatable. Wouldn’t you think that they would know whether there were weight facilities and make the proper arrangements accordingly?

If I recall correctly you are not Donovan and if you are I apologize.

So basically you are calling Dan Pfaff a liar? If you had read the rest of the thread you would have seen that that statement came directly from Dan Pfaff himself, as seen on the seminar DVD. Care to refute that?

What rubbish are you talking about, who called DP a liar???

We covered that Dan said he did already - who is debating that NOW? ITs been covered already.

It takes $$ to fly over early enough, check out the facilities (if your allowed) - not every body can do that - And it would be crazy to take somebodys word for it - 5min close might be with no crowds n security in a golf car… In oly time that could drag out to 30min or more??

That then marks the Q.

If your doing that Taper version for an Oly games, then why not do it for all Major meets? Therefore - you need to ensure that Each major meet also has a close to use Weights facility - otherwise it become an Insane Gambling idea.

Every major meet - no matter your level, State, National or World - needs a taper that is Duplicatable every time, no matter the conditions.

If weights ARE infact available at every Major meet you attend - then kudos.

Let me settle this once and for all. What is reported is true. Dan’s training is different to Charlie’s and he doesn’t taper via intensity but via density. They did heavy cleans after the quarters and couldn’t do anything else because there was no room. Please enough of this.

Dans methods work, but you need extra therapy.

Do you think that every single facility is like one from the 80s? Do you think people are so in the dark that, oh I don’t know, the organizers of the Olympics will not provide information about this availability to the national organizations? Or that people get there at the start of the race? Most people get there well in advance, it’s not like they just show up there for the first time at race day. Your posts about this are pure comedy because you keep neglecting the reason why weights were chosen and what Pfaff is even considering.

Did I ever say Dan didnt do cleans after quarters? NO. So maybe you should quote Davan and boldwarrior because they are the two that are debating, I have Dan dvd’s and have a good idea what Dan does training wise.

Most people know what to expect eh?? How many OGs have you been to?
The stadium is often (usually) off limits till the meet itself and what IS there is often shared on a first come- first serve basis, and, if it can be reserved, it’s reserved for the home side. Do you plan on carrying your Oly weights in there with you? This is why you don’t want to rely on what you might not have.

Here is a post from Dan over at the athleticscoaching.ca website, I feel it is appropriate for this conversation. He is speaking about prepping the body for Max V sessions.

"Preparing for a max speed session is a very complex format from my vantage point. In a macro sense, I like to see acceleration work, specific power exercises and a compatible weight room session proceed this workout the day before or even better two days before depending on time of year and status of health. Sometimes we do the session described above on a Monday and then do relaxed technical runs the following day combined with lots of stabilization and restorative movements and then hit the speed day on Wednesday…

In a micro sense…we do unique warmups on a speed day with special emphasis on activities whereby I and the sports med team can evaluate athletic readiness and health. If the athlete is a bit flat, the warmup routine will be of an ascending tempo and intensity design. If they are a bit too aroused, then we would implement a calming or descending theme in the warmup section…If the athlete appears to be of proper readiness, then the warmup scheme’s tempo is left to their own design. Often times we need to intervene with soft tissue work, tissue stimulation work, re-education routines, etc…before doing the speed session. The stimulation work can range from acupuncture, cross friction on insertions and origins, short arc patterns, multiple throwing of light implements, jumping exercises, etc…Not all of these are used on a given day, these are just examples of things we have found to amp up the quality and safety of this type of work. The value of having consistent warmup protocols is that one can develope a grid to judge mechanical factors, emotional readiness, reactivity indices, etc…

We experiment with different types of warmup routines, numbers, distances, features, therapies and so on throughout the pre-competive phase to see how the athlete reacts to the various protocols. Their comfort level may change as fitness and stress evolves but generally I have found that most of the great ones gravitate to certain formats and become irritated if we stray too far from their comfort zone.

After the warmup session, we do a series of accelerations to double check injury factors, readiness, and mechanical efficiencies. If problems persist, we do additional interventions and retest before doing the speed section. I am extremely careful with this type of work, especially during the competive phase of things. I think that volume and distance run needs to be prescribed on that given day and monitored closely. Of course I have a designed format but that is just a goal sheet. Environment, health and readiness control the exact prescription."

Charlie–

Didn’t the stadium hold events on the track before the Games in Atlanta? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I didn’t think the first and only event held there (and on that track) was the Olympic Games. The Olympic trials and such. Since Bailey trained in the US most of the year and Dan has/had a bunch of US athletes, it wouldn’t be something completely foreign.

Also, if people actually listen to what Dan said instead of making presumptions (Bold), he doesn’t say you need to do weights, but that it is a tool. In a certain circumstance, olympic lifts best fit the situation. He didn’t say everyone needs to do 8x1 olympic lifts or that you can’t do them, but that they are a tool, just like using medballs (which you have described in a variety of your materials), or plyos, or many other things.

Doesn’t matter what was held before- it matters how it is set for that one big meet. Hey! This is me you’re talking to. I’ve been there and i know what you can and cannot count on. The only constant is that there will be general chaos.
I’ve posted here before about the specific hurdle prep some groups worked on- only to go to Zurich and find you are warming up on a grass field with no hurdles at all.
If you like the idea of a specific stimulus warm-up- good luck to you- hope you find what you need for it.

Is it possible that Donovan did this workout at a separate venue or was it implied that it was at the warmup facility at the stadium?

Some people just dont get it CF, even if you tell them the sky is blue they will swear the sky is green.
