We are about 20 minutes north of Monterey. By Castroville. I go to North Monterey County High School, we’ve a great distance squad here, but I wouldn’t expect much of our sprints below 400 meters… Just about all of those poorly written horror story threads like “Help with bad coaching”… “STUPid Caoch neEd Hepl!” … well, yah, seems like our sprint coach went to the same coaching school.

Week-10 Saturday: Los Gatos All Comers
Workout: 15 min warmup, light stretches, 800m race, 20min cooldown, lots of stretching.
Time: 2:02.1
Well… I’m not excited with my time, but I’m not depressed either. Last year I ran a 2:08 this same weekend, and a 1:56 16 weeks later. My 200split was 28-29 seconds, and I felt pretty confidant and in control. I hit the 400 and i was struggling. The back straight was really tough, and I wasn’t able to pick it up and go into my last gear. I could barely sprint the last 200.
My hypothesis that I could not find the speed to kick the last 200, because of the complete lack of any speed work faster than 400m pace. My other hypothesis is: In the past ten weeks I have been concentrating on transferring my cross country 5k strength into my 800m; however, I have ignored the fact that I am a much better 400 runner than 5k runner, so therefore ignored my greatest asset, my top end speed and special endurance. I’m definately going to adjust my training program to suit the development of my strengths. I think any aerobic running I do in the future will be purely for recovery purposes.

“I think any aerobic running I do in the future will be purely for recovery purposes.”
Yeah. I like the sound of that coming from an 800 guy who has a good aerobic base anyway.
Good thing you got a good/better coach to help you facilitate intelligent training.
I agree, you’ve come to the right conclusions.
I only wish I had come these conclusions sooner
Edit: In just two and a half years I don’t think I can get the benefits I expect from aerobic running. Capilarization (or something) doesn’t happen overnight, so ater on down the road I might be able to connect my 5k-800, but right now, I haven’t enough miles under my belt for Lydiardian method of training to really be applicable. That and, Lydiard always focused on 4-5 year long training cycles.

Week-10 Sunday
Workout: 6x20+ situps on decline bench, 2x20 flys@20lbs, 2x20 lawnmowers@20lbs (2 each arm), 2x10lawnmowers@35lbs (2 each hand)
I didn’t run today, just relaxed a bit. My right hammy is feeling pretty sore, it was only a little bit sore before the 800 yesterday, and I barely noticed it until I woke up this morning. It’s one of the reasons I’m not running today. The lifts, I focused on bar speed which was all I could do considering that all I had was my folks granny 20lb dumbells…

grade 1 hamstring strain?
- “day after” symptoms; pain
-watch out: ice it after workouts; stretch in direction of muscle fibers to even out scar tissue in that direction.
Oh my gorsh… I it’s hope not a strain. I’ve been doing heat etc. to help with recovery (haven’t had a “post-workout” yet) but I will ice it and do warm-cold contrast showers until the pain goes away…
On a side note (and to the detriment of my U.S. History homework) I’ve decided to determine who has the most popular journal. I’m going to do only the regularly updated journals… now way am I trudging through the archives, danmit.
In order to even the odds, I’m doing it by views per post…

A trend I seem to have noticed here, is that begging and sexy-women-avatars lead the pack, followed closely by succint titles and the word “training”… “journal” was beat out 4-6
with posts like this your “views per post” should skyrocket… not bad for a half-miler.
Nobody loves me joesdad, I already know that

Week-11 Monday
Workout: 800m jog, light stretching, drills, 6x1:00 abs, 10 min warmup jog, tempo workout, 15 min cooldown jog, stretching, nuetral/warm shower, foam roller on hammy.
Tempo:
100+100+100-
100+200+100+100-
100+100+200+200-
100+200+100+100
100+100+100-
- = 50m jog
- = 100m walk
Well my hammy was still a bit sketchy today, wasn’t actively sore or hurting, but I defeinately felt it kind of like a line that I should not cross… so I didn’t cross it.
On a side not I got a copy of CFTS into our sprint coaches hands, he was kind of sceptical, but I’m pretty sure that it will be a good thing for all the sprinters.

i’m sorry, did you say begging?
I think what he ment was
ppl begging for there’s to be read such as MY GPP PLZ CRITUQUE and hot girls
not begging and girl in the same sentance
 Sorry krasna didn’t quite mean it that way… yah, Zenoth’s got it right…
Hey cool, I’m in 4th, and now I feel special:)
gotcha, i read it as one sentence
good luck in training, and take care of your hammy! especially if your coach sees the light in CFTS and gives you speedwork…
You know, sometimes I think you women purposefully terrify unsespecting males just for the fun of it…
Aint that the truth…

Week-11 Tuesday
Workout: 400m jog, 6x0:30 arms, 6x1:00 eccentric abs, 6x1:00 eccentric core, stretching, 20 min easy run, more stretching, warm shower, foam roller on hammy
Well, I was almost giddy when I woke up this morning and my hammy felt like new. during the 20 min run I did sort of a strider to test out my wings and I have full range of motion without hammy pain*… well, if “pain” is a scream (or even just a loud moan) my hammy sort of growled during the very short stride. Oh yah, it was raining REALLY heavily, so our track had turned to a swamp… I didn’t mind because all I’m doing is really resting and prepping for the Simplot games.
