1999 WC 4x100m 1st exchange (Drummond-Montgomery)

not the greatest handoff (with Jon running up on Tim), but USA still won in 37.59

does Tim hit the baton on his hip??? Glad to see that we’re all still human!

it looked like he was using his hip to adjust the baton in his hand.

btw, thanks a ton for the videos, they are a great addition!!!

An awfull transmission, where Drummond is clearly decelerating (look at his knee height and his posterior cycle…), and doesn’t even extend his right arm to give the stick… Montgomery took the stick baddly and lost time in replacing it correctly in his hand…

I searched the intermediate times for this 37.59 relay:

  • split times for baton’s owner (when the baton owner passes the 100m, 200m and 300m points):
    J.Drummond 10.41, T.Montgomery 9.02, B.Lewis 9.23, M.Greene 8.93
  • split times for individual times (actual times for each athletes for the 0-100m, 100-200m, 200-300m and 300-400m sections):
    J.Drummond 10.56, T.Montgomery 9.14, B.Lewis 9.34, M.Greene 8.93

Are you sure about those first leg splits? 10.41-10.56 is dead slow.

Similar to the Penn Relays, Tim provided a poor outgoing target for Drummond. If the pass was intended to be a push type (TCU, Jamaica, etc.), Montgomery’s hand was too low and not fully extended, resulting in baton adjustment upon reception.

I have always wondered why the US has so many problems getting off fast (=< 2.0), but clean exchanges. The hope is that the USATF relay program initiated this season will help.

The cideo i used was a very good footage (following closely the US relay, marks on the soil very clear), so the error margin is very small.
Drummond didn’t pushed his effort long enough, it’s even obvious on fjlee’s video, that explains his poor time. 9.02 by Montgormey isn’t great either. Brian Lewis ran a fast leg, and Mo is at his level.
