Nooooo!!!
Sad to say it BUT there is a lesson here. NEVER treat the Olympics- or any major event as a given. Reading poetry off the balcony? WTF? It is a race like all the others that got you there and she would have needed a big PB to win it!
Playing to the hick press that way was a recipe for disaster. Do that if and when you win, not before.
Did you see that CBC creep push Angela White, who did her job with distinction, out of the way to get to Perdita? That’s what the press thinks of you when you’re no longer useful. What do you owe to them? Now you know why I wouldn’t let the press talk to my people till after.
I still think Perdita is really hot and if she needs someone to comfort her, I am there for her.
(insert expletives here)
I was looking forward to this race all summer and look what happens.
Were you not concerned with how this was being handled?
I really hope that she did not hurt herself. She is just a kid and obviously went from over confident to humble in an instant. Take a look at the vid, she will need some therapy after jamming her hip and leg trying to stop herself from taking out the Russian.
Geez… it almost looked as though she may have messed up her ACL on the right leg. I didn’t see the live coverage. How was she after they scraped her off the track?
I feel bad for the girl that she took out… shades of Greg Foster on Mark McKoy.
I figured a worse case scenario was that she’d finish out of the medals, that she’d run slow - not that she’d hit the first hurdle.
This one didn’t look intentional as it did with Foster.
Well the Russians have filed a protest and the medal ceremony has been delayed. I must say Joanna Hayes was amazing - broke the OR - I doubt Perdita would have beaten her, but the silver was well within her limits.
The “I follow track once every four years” crowd on tsn.ca are out in full force too - I’ll take back all my British comments in the Radcliffe thread - Canadians are worse. http://tsn.ca/olympics/news_story.asp?id=96123
This will be interesting - I can see the Americans freaking out already.
Still the medals ceremony and medallists’ news conference were postponed until Wednesday and organizers put out a release saying: ``A rerun of the event is possible."
Of course it won’t matter - they’ll disqualify Perdita. They should just let the race stand.
Ummm… what was so bad about that article?
Oh, okay I guess you were referring to the comments at the bottom, I agree some of those are harsh. I hate these armchair assholes who have nothing better to do than be critical of those who have accomplished far more than they ever have or will.
LOL Nice edit! I didn’t think they were that bad either, but after reading a few, it makes me want to move to another country.
These are the same idiots who bashed Donovan in Sydney and Ben in Barcelona.
Wow, that was horrible. A nightmare. What a sad way for an olympic dream (and career?) to end. I hope she didn’t injure herself badly … but it looked BAD.
Words can’t describe howsad i feel for her! My heart goes out to her. It’s one thing to finish the race and not win, its another thing to not finish.
I, and i’m sure the rest of canada, was thinking we’d have this one.
Charlie always coaching!
What did you mean by this?
Don’t worry Herb I’ll handle that! Actually not only was I devistated when she didn’t win, but then I heard she had a boyfriend!
By playing to the hick press I mean dealing with the imbicility of CBC. “This race is hers to lose” and so on. It’s far to easy to buy into this horseshit and forget that the way you won in the past was by flying under the radar and preparing the way that brought you there. In her interview after, she made it clear that she was thinking of the consequences of a bad race after all the hoopla.
Case in point. The public discussion with the coach on the last-minute changes to “improve the start”. Why must the start be changed at the last minute? Was she not winning before? While trying to portray a brave face, you are being told that your start as is, is not good enough- something special is needed, even though in the past you won every race from behind.
If we can get a slow-mo on the start of the semi-final and final, side by side, we can see what happened right away (any experts for this?). She “wound up” in the final, trying to be powerful instead of just quick, causing a rock-back, putting her in a huge hole before the race even started. Struggling to make up for it did the rest.
The other girls in the race got PBs by running their own race and taking advantage of the fantastic conditions.
I know!! I couldn’t believe that…Angela White herself if you look back at the tape, you can ssee her rolling her eyes at him as if she was thinking, “ok, i guess I should move over then”. That was rude and not very professional either.
