10 Junior Athletes Seek Asylum In Canada

MONTREAL, July 16 (AFP) - Ten athletes competing atlast week’s world junior athletics championships haveapplied to the Canadian authorities for politicalasylum.
``The vast majority of people requesting asylum areallowed to stay in Canada to pursue theirapplications,’’ a spokesman for Canada’s immigrationminister Robert Gervais said Wednesday.
Under Canadian law the age and nationality of theasylum seekers cannot be released.
Around 1400 athletes aged between 15 and 17 from 160countries competed at the July 9-13 meeting in Quebec.
