straight inta coaching...

Just found out that M broke the 23 year old club record for 60h. She bettered it in both heat and final. She was also 0.01 off the 70m record…

22-2-16

group
drills + stretches
slam ball throws
platform jumps

group + M (after warm up)
30m hc races x 5

M
knee punches x5, 20m sprint, sand agog jumps, speed drills - x2

24-2-16
M
twilight session due to heat
drills/stretches
hurdle step over/snap jump/running over
platform jumps
ankle swaying

monday’s session saw her return to her short step scuffing technique, but after hurdles, etc. she started getting her feet up again. this looks like it’s going to be a tough habit to shake permanently and will probably require regular attention for a few years at least.

spirits and energy are high, although I get the impression she has a “job done” mentality at the moment. it will be interesting to see how she trains for the next few weeks before states. on her regional results she is placed in the top 5 for all events except the 200…

26-2-16
club comp
HJ
100m - 16.8
800
SP - pb

there was a little bit of drama tonight in the 800, as M’s rival shoved her three times in plain view of everyone. there have been simmering tensions for a while.
her 100m run was pretty easy and she got a pb in the shot put.

1-3-16
group
warm up/stretch
SB relay
knee kick/5m sled/20m sprint/sand pogo/speed drill x2
walking flags

M
warm up
kk/5sd/20accel/sand/drills

very good session…

7-8-16

group
warm up and drills (introduced HF and flute exercises immediately before stretching)
platform jumps
3x50m sprints

just the three today. brief walk through on acceleration, top speed, and finishing.

LM has improved greatly, but he flops his head around too much. he needs to focus straight ahead
LI drifts to the left and sometimes drifts out of her lane. she gets distracted a lot and looks around, including at the starter, at bystanders, and at her feet.
S looks a million times better than before christmas (hence all the big bp’s), but she tensed up in the neck and shoulders on her second run…

8-3-16

M
warm up/drills, grass
4x40m, track

this session was interrupted with some emotional issues. A bit of discussion determined that M is worried about not winning the hurdles at states. she has not been defeated all season and is putting pressure on herself to keep it that way.
to cheer her up a little I let her try a 3pt start. she liked it and did it well, getting a good 20m split.

9-3-16

M
warm up - on toes and slide foot back for kick march
hurdles
platform with/without ball reaction drills
speed drills (did these really well)
sand hops
2x30m
soccer

trained very well today…

14-3-16
group
warm up drills
slam ball throws
5m sled/20m sprint
2x50m race

picked up a new girl for the group. She will be a good addition.

15-3-16
M
drills
1x20m
hill jumps (2:5)
speed drills
2x20, 1x30

acceleration still strong (experimenting with crouch starts), but she’s back to scuffing when she’s up. looked terrific in the warm up, but just not clicking and applying it. seems impatient to get her feet on the track.

16-3-16
M (last session for the season)
drills (added flag walks, plus sweep back on marches)
hurdle walk overs - closer together for consecutive steps.
platform reactions
4x30

unfocussed today. more interested in playing in the sandpit with my daughter. the highlight of the session was her third 30m. after much coaxing I was able to get her to show me a 15m glimpse of what I’ve been looking for.

states on the weekend. she seems to have drawn some difficult heats, but I’m hoping she will do her usual trick of rising to a new level against tough competition. either way, she seems much more relaxed about everything…

how is the coaching going ?

Hey Sharmer,

what you are up to these days?

Staying safe we hope and having fun and working hard we hope.

I am keeping well. Still training/studying/working. Body has been holding up after all these years , developed my deadlift to 250kg this year, added 15kg this year.

I was wondering what Mr Hornblower was doing these days as he used to also be up and coming sprinter.

Good to hear all is well for and with you Sharmer.

I tried messaging Hornblower via the email he has registered and then via private message but not heard back.

What area are your studies are you interested in?

I did two undergraduate degree’s a while ago in Science major in Physics and then an Exercise Science degree. I started studying again in 2015 and have 1 unit left in postgraduate STEM degree and also completing another post-grad science research degree.

Probably related to sprinting and performance, I have interest in Strength and Conditioning research/ biomechanics, and tendon injuries.

Sounds interesting Sharmer.

Good hearing your news and Hornblower is alive and said he would be in touch.
