Thanks a lot guys.
D.R.S: One of the BEST films ever!! I love this film…Great classic comedy…
“Ruprecht! Ruprecht! Do you want the gential cuff?”
I would have thought he would have been more sensible about running in those conditions…especially as his groin and the early hamstring scare this year at the JA Trials. Was a 200m race in the wet and cold wise? He came through the season well and should have counted his blessings there. What annoys me most is what Doyle says after the injury. Regardless of whether its the end of season or not…the last thing you need is an injury. He’ll have to go through the countless weeks of re-hab and check ups in a period where he should be resting mentally as well as physically.
Unlike Hamilton he must have been on slicks instead of wet tyres. Seriously though what the hell was he playing at running in such crap conditions after running such fast times over the 100m lately, it was bound to happen.
Let’s hope there IS rehab and none of this rest-it shit we seem to be hearing- otherwise…
time for the genital cuff.
Safa is a f*cking Cashcow
they don’t get it or something?
Its only a matter of time before Gay goes down too. I really wonder about the meet selection.
Maybe you should read a bit more or know the whole situation before making comments like that.
Even Charlie said that if the meet schedule is already agreed upon, you are not going to have an easy time breaking that without ramifications of the financial nature at the very least. I find it funny that everyone here is knocking Asafa and his coach (who have been very successful with a number of athletes mind you) when Ben had a major injury (severe hamstring tear) when having a similar travel schedule and significantly easier comp schedule! Ben made some trips to Japan and back to Canada and Asafa made multiple trips through Europe, then to Asia, then to different places in Asia in a span of 9 days.
Is that necessarily a great idea? Not sure and it’d be a bad idea to make sweeping statements without knowing the contracts in play.
Yes, it’s a very tough balancing act between the athlete’s financial interest to make “hay while the sun shines” and the needs of preparation for the big event. I talk about this in Speed Trap.
Is that necessarily a great idea? Not sure and it’d be a bad idea to make sweeping statements without knowing the contracts in play.
It is not that. The choice is; end of season meet in Japan with intention to collect $50-100K (irrelevant) or prevention of chances of getting injured with intention to start OG season in time (should I mention -healthy), and then win the OG, earn star status, collect the $50-100K + heaps more, with gold in pocket?
Contracts or selective approach?
I should point out that, in general, Sept provides the best weather conditions in Japan which is why so many of their meets are held then and why athletes sign up for them. Asafa was under a serious obligation to fulfill his contract BUT was under no obligation to win a 200m race or run a fast time in it. We can only speculate what would have happened if he had paced it out for 20.50 or higher.
Additionally, he was generally under FAR less risk to enter a 200 with limited competition than a 100m like in Brussels right after the WR. He was lucky to survive Brussels IMO (and an injury there at that speed would have been horrendous) and the race there might have contributed to the overload that finally caught up with him in Japan.
Ben ran a fair number of meets after Rome BUT against no competition with very modest efforts (something like a sub max training session that paid!).
Then why run any meet after Osaka? Based purely on the Osaka performances, there would be no reason to continue the season and risk injury. He then ran some of the fastest times ever. Had it not been for the poor conditions in Japan, this may not have happened. This is without mentioning the severity of the injury, which hasn’t been stated publicly. He sure wasn’t lying on the ground withering in pain that is for sure.
If you have no reason to believe somebody is going to be injured, but they have a massive upside (potentially $100k just to show up not to mention possible performance bonuses) in a sport where you may never know when you are done, I don’t see how you can just say shut it down.
Contracts or selective approach?
Can you explain? Were Charlie and Ben greedy when they had him flying to Japan a few times in the early season to get his $$?
Is it a balancing act? , Asafa would have made plenty of $ this year, given that going rate is $100,000 per meet. When it comes to money, how much is enough. Given Asafa’s young age I would say that he has infinite amount of earning capacity in the future. I see greed coming into the equation. It may not be from Asafa himself but the management team behind him.
Where is your information that Asafa is getting $100k a meet? Word (from people in the know) is he has never gotten a full $100k as an appearance fee and even with that $100k, he is taking home a very small portion of it (tax in country of meet, tax in jamaica, agent gets a portion, coach gets a portion, etc.).
Don’t be so sure how little the proportion is- the tax is entertainment tax in the country in question and with a trust fund income tax is deferred till it comes out (you spend it!) better deal than many other pro sports get. I have no idea about the coach deal there.
From one of Charlie’s earlier posts. Regardless your telling me hes not making some serious cash??
Compared to who? I’d love to see what Asafa makes versus the average starting NFL player or any major sport. He’s not broke, but it’s not like he is making a small mint. Why do you think guys like Mo keep showing up to meets in crap shape? They have to put food on the table.
I don’t believe Charlie ever said Asafa IS getting $100k in appearance fees (only 1-2 meets can afford that anyway?). He said Mo at his peak could demand that much at the biggest–Asafa doesn’t have the same appeal to the general public as Mo did.
