Visa restrictions hold back nine of Jamaica’s Pan Am athletes

Nine of Jamaica’s 32 athletes selected for the Pan American Junior Track and Field Championships, beginning on Friday, look likely to miss the meet.

The nine athletes were not able to travel through the US as they did not possess the required visas to travel through that country.

The Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) has informed that efforts to place these nine athletes on non-US flights travelling to Brazil also proved futile.

These athletes will now be included in the Senior Pan American Games and the North Central American and Caribbean Championship (NACAC) under-23 squads.

In the meantime, 23 of the athletes arrived in Brazil safely on Thursday while another three are due in the South American country Friday.

And head coach Danny Hawthorn says he is expecting big things from the athletes.

Danny Hawthorne is the coach of Yohan Blake, wonder what he does with those St.Jago sprinters, in terms of training. Anyone know his training methodologies/approach. They all run solid 400’s 47s or better(the St.Jago High Schoolers, so this guy must know quite a bit.
