Double world youth champion Kirani James smashed through the 45-second barrier for the first time in his career, breaking the world indoor 400m best in the process with his clocking of 44.80 at the SEC Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

James, the world junior 400m champion, broke the previous mark of 44.93 set by Olympic champion LaShawn Merritt on the same track six years ago. James’ performance is an absolute PB, faster than his outdoor best of 45.01.

The 18-year-old from Grenada now sits at No.3 on the world all-time indoor senior list behind world record-holder Kerron Clement (44.57) and world outdoor record-holder Michael Johnson (44.63).

The multi-talented Christian Taylor, 20, produced the other leading performance of the SEC Championships, winning the triple jump with a lifetime best of 17.36m. The 2007 world youth triple jump champion also boasts quality PBs of 8.19m in the long jump and 45.34 in the 400m. Taylor’s Florida team-mate, 19-year-old Will Claye, leapt 17.17m to finish second.

Former NCAA champion Lakya Brookins clocked her second-fastest time to date to win the women’s 60m in 7.14, while Kimberlyn Duncan set a world-leading 22.78 to win the 200m.
