How to talk about female weight gain

haha good attitude!
i’m very sorry that girls haven’t discovered you guys yet, im sure it will happen
i disagree though- i still think we have it tough. it’s really really annoying to deal with the pill and all that hassle- who wants to gain weight as a female?? nobody! but then of course you and your boyfriend secretly wish you were on it, blah blah blah it goes on.

You got it or you don’t got it.

The pill could be the cause- or it might just be a response to age related changes. I’ve always found that tempo is a great help in controlling weight/leanness for women in particular. Funny. A lot of the negative comments about the pill seem to be comming from males- who seldom share in the consequences that might result.
If used, the pill should be carefully monitored. It seems that often a girl will go on a low-dose pill and be upset by breakthrough bleeding that may initially occur and then go right back to the doctor and get a higher dose pill- this is where the weight goes on! It often takes a few months for the system to normalize with a low-dose pill, and, with patience, the problem may resolve itself.

Charlie said it right. The same goes with anti-depressants (ADs), alot of Dr’s just up the dosage and there goes on the weight.

Try and find out if she is on ADs, maybe she is going through some tuff times with either school or family etc. If this is the case, there are a number of other ADs she can take that can help with her problems and not put on weight, the only downfall, is that its basically a crap-shoot. Dr’s dont know which drug is best and what dosage and so the only way to figure that out is to experiment until you find the one that seems to work best for you. The problem there, is that everything that is going on in your life in the mean time, ie. school, track, etc, goes to the shits b/c you suffer side effects if this or that drug is not for you and when you then come off the drugs you then have discontinuation effects (withdrawal), so either way, you get screwed. BUT THE OPTIONS ARE THERE, YOU JUST HAVE TO KEEP TRYING.

Carbs intake is something to look at while on ADs AND the pill, contrary to what most think. (pharmacists and Pych. docs)

Many women, unfortunately have no choice but to get on the pill due to certain medical reasons, ie.polycystic ovaries, that can’t have their menstrual cycles for quite sometime, which is very dangerous (increase risk of cancers). And so the only way to regualte their periods is to take the pill, and so this is the dilemma many women/Dr’s go through, they have to see if the benefits of taking the pill or AD’s outweighs that of negative aspects of the drug, ie. side effects like weight gain.

Its not only a female problem, males are also on the rise.

One interesting point or question I would like to pose to all here is, if an athlete, who is much older-say in their mid-to-late 20’s, and has been on the pill or ADs for a few years due to medical reasons and IS NOW OFF THE MEDS and has suffered side effects (ie., primarily weight gain), and b/c of their medical problem has been away from their sport (ie. primarily track or other individualized sports) for several years (ie. 1-5 years), very seldomly training and definetly not competing, DOES THIS ATHLETE HAVE A CHANCE IS THE SPORT TO EXCELL AND PROSPER OR SHOULD THEY JUST CALL IT QUITS?

Keeping in mind that the road back maybe extremely tough, not only physically but also mentally. Thanks

First off, any decision on medication must be with a doctor’s aproval and supervision! Second, appropriate meds current or past are not an end to anyone’s career. In the matter of birth control pills, the majority of top women athletes are on them.

I’m like a racehorse, a racehorse with a majestic mame of fire. Racehorses don’t reproduce or get it on until their done racing. I’m like a racehorse but I have a kick-ass mame of fire   !!! No one can mess with that!!! Also I can shoot fire out of my nostrils!!!

Sure…I guess why you use models instead of your own body for an avatar!

as for weight gain…no excuses.

That’s not a model. That’s a picture of Rickson Gracie. I’m not in fantastic shape yet, but I will be in 4 weeks, but I’m in pretty good shape.

Thanks Charlie for the encouragement for those people that perhaps are on meds and feel disconcerted about their medical situation.
Also, I absoultely agree that if taking or deciding to come off any medication should ALWAYS be under the strict supervision/monitoring of a primary care or specialist physician.

T2, is Rickson Gracie the Brazilian (JuJitsu) guy who won the 1st Ulitmate Fighting Championship?

No Vito, that is Royce Gracie, Rickson’s younger brother who won the 1st ultimate championships. Rickson Gracie never fought in U.F.C but fought in Pride a japanese fighting orginization and in some early japanese vale tudo events that paved the way for Pride and U.F.C. He is prolly the greatest brazillian ju-jitsu athlete of all time, his ju-jitsu is supposedly of another world. But I would not consider him the best fighter of all time, he never fought that tough of competition in mixed martial arts events such as U.F.C, so he never proved himself in that arena but his ju-jitsu is awesome. He has a great physique still now at the age of 43 or 44 and is incredibally flexible. There is actually a really good documentry about him fighting in some early vale tudo events called choke http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/6305870748/qid=1065549256/sr=8-4/ref=sr_8_4/102-2078773-3096968?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846, althought the competition he fights isn’t as good as the competition now becuase the sport has evolved alot the documentary is really excellent and an enjoyable movie. In the movie he does some crazy moves and you get to see how flexible he is. He does a yoga posture where he stands straight up on one leg and brings the other leg straight up. Here is an image of that stretch www.limbermen.com/martial-arts/ Rickson_Gracie01.jpg it;s the one on the site call Rickson_Gracie01.jpg

Here is his website http://www.rickson.com/
