thanks guys…i own an ems machine so i was wondering if anybody has any tips on whether or not i should use it post op and how soon after?
pakewi- thanks for the post, appreciate it but they dont accept my insurance and i cant afford it.
yeah, good luck from me too…
Good luck!
So there going labral debridement(trim it up), rim trimming, but what kind of suregery to deal with bony abnormality (is yours pincer, cam or both)?
Thanks guys…
Matt- Yeah and I’m worried about the debridement…worried that it’s going to always be a problem for me. But yeah, he’s going to scope it, but I’m not exactly sure which type I have. I never asked him which type it was…
Don’t sweat it. Good luck to you and make sure to do the best job you can in rehab post-op. Keep being and advocate for yourself and you’ll likely end up in a place health wise that you’re pretty happy with.
well im 9 hours post-op…slept for like 4 hours and woke up feeling pretty good. i guess thats a good sign. (well i dont really want to move the hip much, but just resting doesnt hurt at all.)
im on crutches and im definitely going to use them, but im not sure if i truly need them to get around
there isnt any numbess in the area so he didnt hit any nerves i guess.
so far so good
oh and matt, it was cam type impingement, except…he couldnt shave it… it was way too close to major blood vessels. so all i had done was the labral debridement.
so maybe the pain will go away…but what if i re-tear it…
sounds like good news so far. glad to hear it…
yeah so far so good
so the doc told me since he didnt shave the bone that i can bear full weight on the leg, and i dont even need the crutches
today im walking much better, less of a limp. i can climb stairs without too much of a problem. i still havent taken any pain meds. i must have a high pain tolerance
day 3: i can walk nearly normal again. im barely limping. stairs are no problem. flexing the hip is still a pain in the ass though so i dont do it lol.
this seems like fast recovery…i almost feel like i could go for an extremely light jog lol
they must have given me meds that made my whole body completely pain free(besides the hip lol)…because yesterday i started feeling the normal little aches and pains again.
Make sure you don’t just go back to activity and training as you’d like. You need to be doing some rehab to create as good an environment as you can around the hip.
Since they left the cam, deep hip flexion patterns are probably not going to be your friend and are likely something to avoid in training (limited squatting depth to irritation free depths, choosing mobility work and stretching modalities wisely etc…)
The labral mess is cleaned up, but it’s not a new hip. Encourage function of the hip stabilizers, maintain joint space/mobility of the capsule and train in patterns that don’t irritate.
Yeah he told me I can bear full weight, I just can’t “exercise” or flex/rotate the hip muc. I’m just walking and still being careful with it. I’m going to have my sutures taken out next week and I’ll ask when I should begin physical therapy.
I figured that much. I don’t even know if sprinting will be an option anymore. I can see lifting weights being ok, but sprinting is still questionable. There isn’t necessarily much lateral rotation of the hip, but there is tremendous hip flexion which I guess could still create another tear.
Opinions?
or…what about if I only did max velocity/speed endurance work? If I’m correct, hip flexion shouldnt be too high (equivalent to a parallel squat or not even parallel)??? Am I right to say that hip flexion is greatest in the acceleration phase?
It’s all very individual to the bony and capsular setup of your hip. The capsular/tissue part is still somewhat modifiable based on the quality of your rehab. Your rehab will clue you in to what will and will not work.
I found personally and have also found with a few of the impinging athletes I’ve worked with that after cleaning things up sprinting can be therapeutic for maintaining good hip ROM. Block starts, deep angle starts, etc… can be problematic depending on the individuals hip setup/pathology.
Do you know of any pro-athletes with hip impingement that still play?
Day 5:
Limping is nearly non-existant now. I’m still using my left side more for everything, but that’s only because I’m playing it safe and don’t want to do anything until the doctor tells me it’s okay) . I can flex the hip without much pain. There is still swelling, but each day it feels better and better. The original prognosis was 4-6 weeks without exercise. Maybe it’ll be only be 2 weeks
How’s the hip progressing?
hey its coming along fine…im going to see the doctor on tuesday again. hopefully he recommends PT soon
6 weeks post-op…I’m beginning to get really worried. There is still a lot of swelling. I can walk/climb stairs fine… but there is still a lot of pain with hip flexion…especially approaching 90 degrees. He obviously got rid of the catching in my hip with the debridement, but sometimes my hip pops after not moving for a while (like when you crack a knuckle), and the swelling/pain is beginning to worry me. I’ve been icing it daily…but it’s not helping!!
im also starting to wonder if he cut through one of my tendons…there’s 4 portals and one of them appears to go through the hip flexor. i understand that this is a deep surgery and he obviously cut all the way into the joint, but i don’t think I should be this swollen anymore…
Here’s a pic to show what I mean
