Any news on Milburn?
After running a sub 46s early on in the year (State Champs?), i believe he came down with a bug, and still ran in Sydney and Melb, and then under-performed at Nats.
Thought he would be in mid 45s form by now, ready to go sub 45s in 2mths time, but back to back 46 highs doesnt sound too good at the moment.
On another note, Offereins is showing good form, add another mix to the relay pool!
If AUS pick Offereins for the world champs 4x4, that presents a potential dilemma for AUS 4x4 relays coach Penny Gillies who I gather is also
Milburn’s personal coach.
It is perhaps premature to speculate, but would she drop him from the relay?
There is still six weeks for him to return to form. His best last year was 44.8, so 46.6 off the blocks in his last few runs would be frustrating for them at best. He will not progress in the individual event at worlds with such a time and they know that.
I understand the Beijing semi-finalist is perfectly healthy with no injuries and is now in Europe, so I hope it is nothing more than judging the time-line and he will be flying by the time Berlin starts on August 15… or at least in time to make a run at relay medals by the time the meet wraps up on August 25. So plenty of time in theory.
What are the chances do you think he will in pb shape come Berlin?
( ps JM has looked tired and flat from my recent observation)
Interesting point from KK about Milburn’s coach having to consider Offereins (if selected) ahead of Milburn.
Going on last Friday night, I don’t think it’s a difficult choice. The gap between Offereins and Milburn was nearly one second which in 400m running is pretty significant. It was a comprehensive win and at this stage I can’t see how the selectors can ignore Offereins and must add him to the team.
At this stage the team should line up as:
Steffensson, Thomas, Offereins, Wroe.
We need a good start to set it up and Steff will ensure we are around the mark at the first change over.
Thomas runs a good 800m so is use to the changeover (from lanes to indian file) and should hold his position.
Offereins is a good judge of pace and brings the ‘X’ factor that Ormrod offered in Athens. (Ormrod ran 3rd in Athens). He would leave Wroe in a solid position to bring it home.
As our (current) fastest athlete, Wroe needs to do the tough job of bringing it home and make up any ground that needs to be made.
There would need to be a significant improvement in form from Milburn to force his way back into the team.
I agree. I actually don’t like a coach being head coach with a conflict of interest as in this case. NO good can come of it. I am sure Penny is a nice person but the issues…
For one I am glad we are talking about being able to change athletes for others because of performance.
400 mètres
- Jermaine GONZALES (JAM) 46.35
- Joel MILBURN (AUS) 46.51
In France overnight…
On a good note, first up win for Sally ahead of meet in Lausanne on Tuesday:
100 mètres haies
- Sally McLELLAN (AUS) 12.75
Got an email that Milburn ran 45.83 and won but didn’t say where the meet was, so that’s great he’s finally starting to move forward…takes pressure off him and his long-suffering coach -aren’t they all
Thats great!
hopefully a few more races over the coming weeks will knock another 1sec off that!
I’m not sure Penny Gillies should be in this situation. In my view Tudor Bidder should be the head coach of the 4 x 400m team as he hasn’t got a conflict of interest. He does coach Chris Troode, but it is highly unlikely Troode will run quick enough at the World Uni Games to threaten Offerein’s spot. Bidder is a fair man, very competitive and genuinely wants the team to succeed and will pick the best team.
…Earlier in the evening Chris Troode ran a surprising season’s best of 45.79s to go into the mens 400m final as the fastest qualifier. Japan
s Kanemaru Yuzo is the form athlete of the field with a 45.16 personal best. South Australian Clay Watkins ran 47.04s to place fourth in his semi-final and failed to advance.
I’ve known Penny for quite a while now and although I know it is never possible to completely take yourself out of a situation, I think Penny does not inject much, if any, ego into her coaching. I think that if she were put in the hypothetical scenario discussed on here, I’d expect her to make the right call - although, it never could be easy.
It’s great to see Ben drop such a great time. He had an awesome run at Nationals in 05 and then never really progressed from that.
The selectors have quite a dilemma in front of them - but what a great problem to have!
Chris Troode surprised everyone including himself with the 45.79 in the semi final. He has had an injury plagued prep and had not had a proper race since the nationals. He ran 48.08 in the heat and whilst it would have been relatively easy for him it certainly did not suggest he was in sub 46s shape.
Fantastic to see him back in shape.
Unfortunately the 45.79 took its toll and Chris was unable to take part in the final last night won by the Japanese athlete Kanemaru Yuzo in 45.68.
Not sure of the rules and whether he is no longer able to participate in the meet for scratching from a final, but hopefully he recovers in time for the 4 x 400m relay final on Sunday arvo.

btw, a great relief to hear the news on Joel Milburn and his 45.83 run.
Troode popped his shoulder in the warm down after his 45.79
Just for the record, stick with Penny Gillies on making any relay decisions. I’ve made a 180 degrees turn around on my thoughts regarding Bidder.
I’ve learned the hard way…a case of once bitten, twice shy.
Well, Berlin is a wrap and Penny Gillies took the toughest decision in dropping her own athlete, Milburn, from the 4x400 final lineup who went on to win a memorable bronze medal. By the way, I gather it was Aths Aussie head coach Eric Hollingsworth who appointed Penny as 4x400m coach. The only say she had in it was the right to decline. So well done the coaches and their team. Hopefully Milburn received a medal for assisting in the prelims, but not sure of the IAAF policy these days.
Agree KK. Terrific result and kudos to Penny Gillies for coaching the team. Should ensure she stays the coach up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
After hearing of the very dubious splits given from the Uni Games, and about some matter since…I don’t have as much faith in Bidder as I had before hand.
Take a look at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LExiKfwLJlM
Joel, lane 7, possibly the worst start ever. Seems to react, but pops straight up and tries to get into his running too quickly. Lost the stagger pretty quickly and tried to fight it down the back straight.
Based on that, why did they have him starting in the relay? Based on how poor his block clearance was at the time, they should have had him from a running start (ie 2nd or 3rd leg) to get an indication. He lost valuable time from the start, and Penny had no choice but to drop him
He is starting like a hurdler.
