Do you mean less volume tempo-wise, speed-wise, or everything-wise?
I guess I can make an effort to run on grass more often, because lately I’ve been doing tempo 500s on the track… (at least I’m not wearing spikes too, like my teammates are… ) It’s hard when you’re trying to train with a team… Last week for instance I wanted to do my 500s on grass and the coach told me it wouldn’t really make a difference. By the end of the week though we resolved that and we agreed that my low intensity days can be on the field (pretty good grass too).
There are different issues here. you have a history of shinsplints and that can be resolved by doing ONLY speed work and doing tempo and drills in water or via cals etc. Charmaine Crooks had this issue in high school and did 2 x 200 fast twice a week in the winter with the rest done as pool, cals and weights for several months. She ran 52.66 in her third race. Molly Killingbeck had to train away from running for several weeks after a sprained ankle and opened up with a world lead in the 500m indoors, so things can be worked around.
Where do you live and what is the weather like now?
pfeeew, good stuff (I almost quit track this morning:eek: … but it made me really sad so I immediately changed my mind)
I can actually understand how things can be worked around, as I have pr’ed in the past right after 6 weeks of off-time due to fractures, and I was in the pool every other day, and on the bike every other day working my guts out.
I live in Greece (thessaloniki), which might sound warm, but we’re having a cold winter.
The way my coach works things (to stay warm), is for speed sessions we warm up and do drills inside, and then go outside and run one fast 100m, then go back inside, and usually do that 3 times. We do have an inside facility, but that’s only good for 80m (and he prefers the full 100m reps), and if we travel across the city ,there’s also an indoor facility good for full 100m (we’ve been there twice so far).
Do you think I should have my speed days twice a week (say Monday,Thursday) and do pool Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, with Wednesday and Sunday off?
Would you even consider running indoors? My goal is 400m outdoors.
Thankssss
p.s. was at the sports doc’s office this morning for ultrasound, to check out that tendon on the left knee (at the inside and towards the back, running up towards the quad). He saw tendonitis and we did electro acupuncture, and I need to go 2 more times and not run till treatment’s over.
I’ve never really had tendonitis before (pretty painful, and it feels like it’s gonna snap when sprinting and even striding). Is this something that tends to come back?
it does with no therapy.
once you get the all clear that all the scar tissue has gone, you’ll be fine.
perhaps tightness and or strength imbalances issues are present too? Did the or can the Sports Dr give you exercises as well?
Online i can say you to do deep tissue massage, ultrasound bla bla bla therapy, orthotics, check your TMJ, spine, CNS, flexibility, biomechanics…but these are only words…take this plane…!!!
Milan, January 2008…
Ciao
I’d like to update here:
Milan has been high on my brain’s list for January.
I’m currenty out of training for this week (and probably for the week to come).
Something is very wrong with my left knee.
The hamstring tendonitis is the very least, what bothers most even walking around is a knee cap pain and a lower knee bruise-like pain (it also hurts to touch there).
I found myself in a orthopedic surgeon’s office couple of days ago to take out my sister’s stitches (she had broken her elbow falling off her bike  ) and I asked about my knee.
He moved/pulled/tested the knee/leg around and told me there’s an unstableness and I need to get an MRI.
So I want to see what the test shows before I decide what I’ll do with the rest of my body
Stick to the plan! Visiting Jamirok, I mean
As Charlie says, there are alternatives. Especially in a week’s time with the pool (you should probably ease off anyway for now).
Re Charlie’s advice for less volume -good luck with that with Stef…
I’m going to Milan
see you soon…
Hurray! Good for you!
Just came back from Milan, and let me tell you, I had one of the most interesting weeks in my sports life.
I met a couple of outstanding individuals
My legs are working fine (I had two track tests as well > all good)
It was the most painful week of my life, but in a nice way!
Looking forward to similar experiences… !
Thanks to all who suggested me taking that plane
Good to hear. Any details?
Yes, well I was put in balance by Jamirok (you can ask him for exact details, I don’t know the terminology of what he did!), and then I went through a dozen ARP sessions, which is where the pain comes in, but it is a wonderful thing! I did 5 days of therapy (1-4 sessions/day), and I was feeling fine by day 1 (!!), and sore as hell from days 2-5 .
Track tests on days 4 and 5 (along with therapy).
Arp is very painful.
It’s great :o
Great Stefanie,
In a general way, the work is based on this points:
- CNS balance.
I’ve worked on release CNS “energy overload”, structural imbalance and then the Doctor of the Clinic has done an acupunture session.
Stefanie was “resetted” totally.
I’ve relaxed her CNS with CST after 3-5 ARP treatments (she had a little CNS/mental fatigue) and she was asleep at the end of the sessions (i’m wrong stef??? :D)
- Pakewi and me have worked on her body inflammation and muscle strength imbalance with ARP.
I’ve worked with Stef for only 2 days, pakewi can help us about the other ARP days (therapy and Track sessions).
That’s all!
ok ok… I “pretended” to be asleep just because I wanted to keep laying there… :o very soothing! (you guys exhausted me with the arp anyway )

I sometimes go to Milan on business. Is there either a park with a decent amount of grass or a track where I can train ?
Well yes of course, but I was only there for a week and don’t know what the best options are. I used a track near Linate airport at a sports complex. I need grass, but saw plently when I visited the castle at Piazza Castello.
