I don’t really think the whole freeganism thing is based on the fact that they are trying to save money by getting the food from the dumpster.
If that were the case I am sure they would just go to Aldi’s or other barebones grocery stores or wait for the food to be one day past its sell by date and get it for a discount.
If recovering costs is the issue I think the freegans are still higher up than most of the people on this site geez.
I am sure they are real impressed by a bunch of people spending hours looking up speed training stuff, spend hours working out, and extra money on food and supplements. For what to run at a meet?
Besides a handful of people on here, most are not going to make a dime off of track or at least recover there costs.
If you see it from the other side we are just as unimpressive as the freegans.
This post is ridiculous. First of all, no one here is claiming to get money off of track or spend less money than freegans. Freegans, on the other hand, DO claim to be saving money (though that is only one of the reasons they do it, there are multiple reasons), which is a truly ridiculous proposition when you estimate the time they are spending finding and cleaning the food. If you watched the show, you’d see people claiming to be able to eat a free breakfast off the bagels they picked out of a trash bag (yes, trash bag) and able to get fruit out of the trash that is only a few days past the sell date and only needs a bit of cleaning. Now, if they are simply trying to produce less waste than the rest of us, perhaps they are successful. I say perhaps because they are still spending time cleaning the foods (more cleaning products) and potentially getting more food bourne illnesses (no data on that yet), which would surely cause medical expenses.
Now, spending time on here could be considered entertainment for most. If Freegans get a similar utility out of their practices, then more power to them and it would make sense. The argument of spending less money though is just ridiculous.
I believe that we have different views of what a Freegan is and I honestly don’t believe that either of us have enough information to be having this argument in the first place.
I believe that I am hearing you say your main contention is that Freegans believe they are saving money from living this lifestyle.
I believe on the other hand through my limited search into this topic, that saving money is not what Freeganism is about. From my understanding Freeganism is about reducing spending towards causes that they don’t believe in. By limiting their budget that does not necessarily mean the their NPV is increasing and in fact most of the time it is decreasing significantly. A lot of these people from my understanding are relatively smart individuals and I believe would understand the costs and benefits of taking part in this. Obviously they are receiving some sort of value from this activity or they would not do it, so more power to them.
If my case is correct, I am just saying Freegans can make the same claim that without regard to any altruistic value most sprinters are also decreasing their actual monetary gains in order to receive personal pleasure.
If your understanding of what Freeganism differs, well then perhaps I am wrong, but I am not claiming to be anywhere near fully informed on the situation. I am just giving my insight.
On the show, I’d say most (if not all) of the “freegans” talked and bragged about how much money they were saving. It was definitely one of the most important points made. Now, I acknowledged that elsewhere, some have claimed to do it because of saving the environment, pollution, etc., but on this particular show, most of the people talked about how much money it saved. Some even used items they found in the trash to decorate their home since it was cheaper and they wouldn’t have to keep up with newer trends (their words, not mine).
Or you could go to Walmart. Canned veggies what 30 cents. Sloppy joe mix 52 cents. Loaf of bread a penny. Seriously. Im not exaggerating its probably some where around there. Might not be the best to eat, but its a way. Just some ideas for you. I know you probably don’t have a walmart handy but it is pretty cheap.
Someone please resuscitate (I looked up the spelling) Clemson please.
