Olusoji Fasuba, African record-holder in the men’s 100 metres, on Sunday in Abuja appealed to Nigerians not
to worry about what was being perceived as his dwindling form.
"Nigerians should not worry about my form, I am in good shape.
In fact, I am ready for Berlin next month,’’ he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in reference to the 12th IAAF Athletics World Championships.
The championships is scheduled for the German city from Aug. 15 to Aug. 23, and the just concluded 20th Nigeria NNPC/Mobil Track and Field Championships held in Abuja was used as a trials for it.
Fasuba, who again, for the second year running, failed to win the championships at the Abuja National Stadium’s mainbowl said he was only giving out from `the little he was given.’
Fasuba, who now runs in the athletics club colours of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), finished third with 10.35 seconds, leaving last year’s winner Obinna Metu to take the title for the second time.
"I have come here (Mobil) to give my best, which I did. As for my form, there is no cause to worry and it is only time that will tell. But, as for commitment as some people call it, I am only giving out from what I get,’’ he said.
The Mobil title winner in 2006 and 2007 said he was not getting the support he desired and which he deserved from the Nigerian sports authorities.
“It is based on the support I am getting from the federation (the Athletics Federation of Nigeria). There is nothing I can do about it for now,’’ he said in reference to accusations of shunning the federation’s invitation.”
Fasuba said he refused to attend the previous weekend’s CAA Abuja Super Grand Prix because the AFN disregarded him after he had failed to win the Mobil event last year.
