Technically you’re right, they did step slightly out of their lanes, so by the rules, they should have been disqualified. Looking at the situation from a perspective of sportsmanship however, they didn’t impede other competitors’ progress by stepping <1" into their lanes and they ran faster times.

I know that if I was beaten in a race, but my competitor stepped on the line once, I wouldn’t want to be declared the winner.

so if once is ok is twice? You have to draw the line somewhere and the rule is 0. If you were Martina would you accept the medal knowing you had broken the rule?
