Cullen says time to scrap Aussie tests
Saturday, October 29, 2005
Legendary Dublin goalkeeper Paddy Cullen has added to the clamour in GAA circles for Ireland to scrap their involvement in the International Rules series.
"I think we should forget about it.
“We were beaten all ends up - and imagine when they were winning by that amount of points they were still trying to kick us around the place,” Cullen opined.
McGee calls on GAA to scrap Rules duel
Saturday, October 29, 2005
Former All-Ireland SFC winning manager Eugene McGee has called on the GAA to cancel next year’s International Rules series on foot of the violence seen in the second test in Melbourne.
Writing in his ’Irish Independent’ column, McGee was incensed by the “rash of thuggery” by Australia in the third quarter which he claimed “was premeditated and used as a deliberate tactic.”
The Longford native says that the GAA has within its power to call a halt to the Series at any time and it has a duty to see that such violence isn’t perpetrated on Gaelic footballers ever again.
“On the evidence of what appeared to me to be a cleverly premeditated plan by the Australians to smash up the Irish team in the third quarter of the game I believe the GAA has little option but to cancel next year’s proposed series,” McGee blasted.
Mulvihill issues warning on Rules future
Saturday, October 29, 2005
GAA Director General Liam Mulvihill has admitted that following the disgraceful scenes witnessed in Melbourne in the second International Rules test, a lot of “soul searching” would be needed if the series is to survive.
"All I could see clearly on the tv coverage were dangerous tackles, and late tackles with no attempt to pull out of a tackle.
"In fact, it was the direct opposite as every time a player had played the ball they were almost guaranteed to be dragged to the ground.
"In a civilised code we have to stand up to that.
“It can’t be tolerated,” declared Mulvihill who stressed that an urgent meeting of the review committee should address the issues.
Sydney Swans star hits out at the Australians
Meanwhile, Sydney Swans star Tadhg Kennelly has hit out at the Australians for “crossing the line” over the course of their second International Rules test victory over Ireland in Melbourne.
"They showed Ireland absolutely no respect.
"They crossed the line with some of the tackling.
"To be honest, I think it only comes from not having respect for the Irish players.
