Aussie Rules

27/10/05
Warm up
Hill sprints 1010m
Deadlift 1RM Worked up to 175kg
Power snatch 60kg 5
3

Hill was a bit steep so they weren’t very fast but they did the job cos 175kg on the deadlift is an 8kg PR. Will be very happy if that keeps improving. Power snatches were a bit ugly for the 1st set but got better once I got the groove right.

Right hammy tightened a bit so I iced it afterwards. Having a couple of rest days and doing some testing on Monday. Looking forward to the International Rules tonight, wish I was going but didn’t organise myself in time so I’ll have to watch on TV again.

This was a poor match.

Apart from the fact we didn’t even compete the worst thing was the blatant dirty play of the Austrailians

In a game in which violence simmered all through, matters boiled over in a disgraceful third quarter that was marked by the dismissal of the hosts’ captain Chris Johnson who laid out both Philip Jordan and Mattie Forde.

In front of 45,428 fans, Johnson walked but at least another four of his team-mates ought to have joined him on the sidelines as late tackles, third-man digs and consistent fouling peppered their approach.

That’s the Irish media view …

The Aussies used all means to stay in front, stretching, bending and breaking the rules of the game as well as giving the Irish a lesson in the art of shooting overs (points).

The hosts signalled their intention from very early on with sub Ryan O’Keeffe flattening Ciaran McManus off the ball in the 6th minute of the first quarter during seconds after being introduced.

Ironically, the Aussies failed to include Russell Robertson, the player yellow carded for an horrendous foul on Tom Kelly in the first test, in their ranks.

It does put the competition in doubt sadly.
Ok rant over …Well done.

Congratulations, fair play to Austrailia, they won that is all that matters I guess.

The media reaction over here …

Cullen says time to scrap Aussie tests
Saturday, October 29, 2005

Legendary Dublin goalkeeper Paddy Cullen has added to the clamour in GAA circles for Ireland to scrap their involvement in the International Rules series.
"I think we should forget about it.

“We were beaten all ends up - and imagine when they were winning by that amount of points they were still trying to kick us around the place,” Cullen opined.

McGee calls on GAA to scrap Rules duel
Saturday, October 29, 2005

Former All-Ireland SFC winning manager Eugene McGee has called on the GAA to cancel next year’s International Rules series on foot of the violence seen in the second test in Melbourne.

Writing in his ’Irish Independent’ column, McGee was incensed by the “rash of thuggery” by Australia in the third quarter which he claimed “was premeditated and used as a deliberate tactic.”

The Longford native says that the GAA has within its power to call a halt to the Series at any time and it has a duty to see that such violence isn’t perpetrated on Gaelic footballers ever again.

“On the evidence of what appeared to me to be a cleverly premeditated plan by the Australians to smash up the Irish team in the third quarter of the game I believe the GAA has little option but to cancel next year’s proposed series,” McGee blasted.

Mulvihill issues warning on Rules future
Saturday, October 29, 2005

GAA Director General Liam Mulvihill has admitted that following the disgraceful scenes witnessed in Melbourne in the second International Rules test, a lot of “soul searching” would be needed if the series is to survive.

"All I could see clearly on the tv coverage were dangerous tackles, and late tackles with no attempt to pull out of a tackle.

"In fact, it was the direct opposite as every time a player had played the ball they were almost guaranteed to be dragged to the ground.
"In a civilised code we have to stand up to that.

“It can’t be tolerated,” declared Mulvihill who stressed that an urgent meeting of the review committee should address the issues.

Sydney Swans star hits out at the Australians

Meanwhile, Sydney Swans star Tadhg Kennelly has hit out at the Australians for “crossing the line” over the course of their second International Rules test victory over Ireland in Melbourne.

"They showed Ireland absolutely no respect.
"They crossed the line with some of the tackling.
"To be honest, I think it only comes from not having respect for the Irish players.

The Chris Johnson incident was ugly, he’d get 4-5, maybe more weeks for that in the AFL. Opinion here is split as to whether we went to far with the aggression and I was a bit suprised by the amount of late tackles we laid. I think some of that was to do with how the Irish boys left themselves wide open and waiting to get rid of the ball until the Aussies had already commited themselves to the tackle. Clearly your blokes set out to be more physical than last time and the early scuffles seemed to be a result of that. The Ryan O’Keefe thing in the 1st quarter would probably have been a 50m penalty to him rather than a reversed free kick in Aussie Rules. If it’s a free kick or a mark in our game and the ball has come loose you have to give it back on the full so O’keefe would’ve been within his rights to give the bloke a bit of a bump cos he blatantly kicked the ball away. Unfortuantely all these incidents have taken the gloss off what has been a huge turn-a-round for us after last years whitewash. From an Australian point of view I hope the backlash isn’t too big in Ireland cos if we have to go too much further away from the rules of our game both the players and public will become disinterested and the concept will fall over from our end.
In happier news I proposed to my girlfriend on Saturday morning and she accepted. We’ve had a big weekend celebrating so I haven’t done any training. I’m doing some testing tonight.

dicko6, congratulations on the engagement! Training can wait a few days…

Thanks Heatwave, training’s definitely been on the backburner this week. Caught up with heaps of people and lots of phone calls and txts congratulating us.

Tested Standing Long Jump, Standing Triple Jump and Power Clean on Monday night. Results were 2.54m, 7.56m and 87kg. It’s about a 1% improvement for all 3. At least they’re improving though. Suprise, suprise I’ve come to the conclusion that my strength is low so I’m going to focus on that for a while.

WOW - Great News !!!
Congrats from Ireland!!!

Thanks No. 23

Warm up
Box jumps 35 85cm box
RDL’s with towel around the bar 4
8 87kg
Step ups 67kg
Dips 3max Did 15.10.6
Chins 3
max Did 6.3.3

I also messed around with some squats, I lift at home and don’t have a rack so I was trying something out but it didn’t seem very stable. I think I’ve worked out a better way but I’ll have to see how it goes. Chins were low but it’s been really hot at night here and hard to sleep so I was pretty tired by the end of the session.

4/11/05
Tempo
10*20secs on/40secs off
Med ball throws *60

This was ok but when I was running down to the trail I run on I have to cross a bridge with a guard rail on it. Anyway I went to step over the rail and my foot got caught, fell arse over of course. Must have looked piss funny to the people driving to work. Made sure on the way back to step well over the rail.

5/11/05
Warm up
Hill sprints 1010m
Bench press 3rm Worked up to 95kg - missed on 3rd rep of 100kg
Speed squats 5
5 40kg
DB bench press 410 22kg DB’s
Bent over row 4
6 67kg
Supersetted with Fat boy chins 410
Good mornings 4
8 47kg

Squats need a lot of work. If I can push them up to my deadlift levels I’ll be fairly happy. Hopefully that sort of improvement will create gains across the board.
Had a chat with my coach about the other club and he really wants me to stay and has offered to make up any money I’d lose. I haven’t had contact from the other club for a couple of weeks so I’m really leaning towards staying now. My family will be a bit disappointed because they want me to play with my brother but I’m not sure I’d enjoy my footy as much which is important.

8/11/05
Warm up
Stair sprints 52
Power snatch 10
1 60kg

Stumbled up most of the stairs cos my feet wanted to go up 2 1/2 stairs at a time instead of 2 at a time. Mucked around with some power cleans and squats before my balancing act with chairs and boxes that I was using to squat went crashing to the floor. Lucky it didn’t put a hole in the wall.

10/11/05
Warm up
Box jumps 35 85cm box
Squats 3
2 107kg 35 87kg
RDL’s 3
8 16 87kg
Step ups 2
8 67kg
Overhead squats 3*6 30kg

Squats are painfully weak so I’ll spend a fair bit of time trying to bring them up to speed. Somewhere close to deadlift levels would be good.

11/11/05
Tempo
10*20secs on/40secs off

This felt good, I want to extend it out a bit next time.

12/11/05

Push press 55 60kg
Squat 5
5 95kg
Good morning 38 60kg
Chin ups 1
8 2*5
Waiters walk 22kg DB ~45m each arm

Just have to keep pushing the squats up, the rest was ok. Our preseason training will officially start on Wednesday even though I don’t really know who I’m playing for yet. I’m pretty sure I’ll end up staying with the same team though. We’re doing a 2km time trial on Wednesday, should be interesting to see how fit everyone is, we’ve had a good 10 weeks of celebrating now.

14/11/05

Snatch 55 60kg
Squats 5
5 100kg
Good morning 38 60kg
Dips 1
15 110 16
Chins 17 24

Was feeling a bit tired but I pushed through. I had a bloody annoying eye twitch all day. Still hasn’t gone away after a good nights sleep so I’ll take it a bit easy today in preparation for tomorrows 2km time trial.

16/11/05
First day of pre season training today. We’re only training as a group once a week at this stage. The season is still about 5 months away. We started witha 2km time trial. I ran 8:20, bloody awful. 400m splits were 1:20, 1:30, 1:50, 1:50, 1:50 so obviously went out too hard and died. It’s really disappointing cos I’ve been running under 8mins for 2km when doing tempo (20secs run, 40secs jog). A few of the younger boys pulled decent times the best being about 6:40. Some of us have a fair way to go though, obviously the celebrating has taken it’s toll.
After that we did a push up and sit up test. Did 55 push ups in a minute and 74 sit ups also in a minute. I have no endurance though cos I did 47 pushups in the first 30secs and then could manage only 8 after that.
Just some basic skill stuff after that and it was good to get the footy in my hands, at least my skills were reasonable. It’s a bit of a reality check and I’ve got a lot of work to do.

18/11/05
Tempo
20secs hard/40secs easy for 2km
200 medball throws

Feeling a fair bit happier today. I decided to do my normal tempo session for 2km just to see how long it took. Ended up pushing it a bit but finished in 7:45 much better than Wednesday. I have trouble running at one pace for too long so next time we do a 2km time trial I’m going to do it like I do tempo, should get a better time doing it that way anyway.

21/11/05
Warm up
Depth drops 45 60cm box
Squats 5
47,87,100,107kg
Deadlifts 61 147kg
RDL’s 2
10 80kg
Step ups 1*10 67kg

Had a couple of days off so was feeling pretty good coming into this. The contraption I’ve set up so I can squat only allows me to start from the bottom position. Basically whatever I can get moving I can do for 5 or so reps. I ended up cutting it short cos I has to go up to mum’s to discuss my forthcoming engagement party.

23/11/05
Football training
We warmed up with a couple of laps and some stretching and strides. Moved straight into fartlek style running with very short jogging periods for about 10-12mins. After that we did 4 or 5 skill drills that also included a fair bit of running and at various stages we stopped and did push ups and crunches for mistakes we made.
It wasn’t a bad session at all, my skills were much better than last week and my hands were clean as well. My right hammy was a bit sore afterwards right under the glute so I iced it when I got home. Most of the new boys seem like decent players so we should be right up there again especially if we can get everyone on the track before Christmas.

25/11/05
Got KellyB’s Vertical Jump Bible and have decided to give it a good go. Being able to jump well is pretty important for my position and I should take advantage of the fact that I have 4-5 months until next season.
Tested Standing vertical - 63cm, Reactive vertical 30cm box - 60cm, Reactive vertical 45cm box - 58cm
Going by those results I’ll be using the Intermediate Reactive focused program.

4 star drill - 210
Low squat ankle jumps - 3
30
Rythmic lunge jumps - 310 each leg
3 step jumps - 3
5 each leg
20m sprint - 3
Squats - 38 100kg
Natural glute ham raise - 3
8

Definitely feeling it in the legs now and my left calf cramped during the last set of glute ham raises so I iced it afterwards. Will just do 1 day of upper body a week with a bit of a strength emphasis.

26/11/05
Warm up
Behind the neck press 55 47kg
Chin ups 5
5
DB Bench press 3*10 30kg DB’s

I also did some isometric stuff like frog stands and chin up holds. I was a bit inspired by the gymnastic championships that were on TV last night. It was only a short session and I’ve got a bad case of DOMS from the day before.

28/11/05
Warm up
4 star drill 210
Ankle jumps 3
15
Rythmic lung jumps 310 each leg
3 step jumps 3
5 each leg
20m sprint 31
Jump squat 3
10 47kg
BB Lunge 38 each leg 67kg
Natural glute ham raise 3
8

3 step jump was better than last time. I got a big dose of DOMS from this session as well, hopefully I adapt to it soon, it’s getting hard to walk up and down the steps in my house.
