This Friday - 28th December is the 126th running of South Australia’s biggest professional foot race, the Bay Sheffield.

Basically, it’s a handicap event over 120m - SA’s eqivalent to the Stawell Gift.

It is the second most prestigious race in Australia next to Stawell with a firt prize of $17,000.

There are 87 entrants this year including 6 time national 100m champion Josh Ross and the controversial Nigerian 400m runner Bola Lawal who returned this year from a two year drug ban.

I love Australia and loved visiting it . Everyone in this country that I met appeared to be interested in Track and running and sport.
I remember Andrew Murphy telling us about the pro racing circuit. He came here to train with us as I knew his girl friends sister who was living in Toronto at the time.
It’s interesting how these races work as I understand it every one tries to come into the race quietly so their handicap is not too great.

Has Darren Clark ever run this event? Do you know?

I don’t think he has run at Bay Sheffield or any pro race for that matter. He was due to run in the Bay Gift in nsw one year but pulled out after having a car accident. It would have been good to see him run from a tight mark and come through the field.

Don’t think Darren Clarke did, Andrew Murphy, he ran low 11s last year in his mid-forties, just a one off race. Still stays in good shape.

Unfortunately for me I coached the blue (2nd) and (3rd). The blue - Robbie James made the next two finals as well, finishing 5th in 2010 and 3rd in 2011. He is having a rest this season and is planning to resume 2013.

The winner for the last two years was Jordan Caldow. He ran off 6.75m in 2010 and won again in 2011 off 3.75m.

Caldow joined my squad in April and will run from 1.25m. He’s running well but the task ahead is massive. The heats have been announced and Caldow has drawn two well fancied athletes in Josh Tiu (9.25) and Ryan Hancock (10.25). First two in each heat advance to the semis.

By the way, Andrew Murphy was 4th in the 1991 Stawell Gift behind another Olympian - Steve Brimacombe.

Sydney Olympics Long jump silver medallist Jai Taurima was 6th in the 2000 Bay Sheffield final.

Andrew Murphy also coached a winner of the Stawell Gift in Dale Seers, CAN’T REMEMBER THE year but do remember the year before Seers was the favourite in the final but broke and copped a metre penalty.

Oh, that is interesting.
I would love to see this race as it seems like a great deal of fun and a nice change up to our traditional track stuff we are all so familiar with.
I did not know Andrew ran fairly recently but I guess any one can enter and it could be worth a shot as some pretty decent cash for a one day payout? Not including all the training and time that goes into however.

Australian 100m champion Joshua Ross won the 2012 Bay Sheffield off scratch becoming the first man in 126 years to win South Australia’s most prestigious foot race off the mark of honour. Ross ran brilliantly to run down the athletes ahead including the favourite John Jakeman.

Weather was warm about 28 degrees Celsius, with strong gusty head winds. In some of the heats it would have been in excess of 7mps. For the final the head wind was about -4.0.
