WORLD YOUTH BEST FOR FENG LIU AND CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BROKEN ON DAY 2 OF
WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

10 July 2003

Sherbrooke - The second day of competition ended on a high note with a
magnificent victory for Russia’s Vera Sokolova in the women’s 5000 metres
Walk and a new World Best Performance for the gold medallist in the Shot
Put, China’s Feng Liu.

Feng Liu came to Sherbrooke as hot favourite for the gold and he exceeded
expectations as he threw an opening 20.62, a second attempt 20.54 and
clinched his victory with the new World Best of 21.45 at his third throw. He
then went on to foul his final three attempts.

Gamely improving with every throw, Canada’s Kyle Helf finished with his
third personal best of the competition to take silver with 20.79 metres.
Amin Al-Aradi of Saudi Arabia threw a personal best of 19.69 metres for the
bronze medal.

Sokolova meanwhile totally dominated the Walk. She too started as the
odds-on favourite for the gold and once she had taken over the lead after
the first kilometre, the 16-year-old was in a race on her own, far out ahead
of the rest of the field, finishing 47 seconds ahead of silver medallist Ann
Loughane of Ireland. Bronze went to Japan’s Noriko Nishide.

Despite the lack of finals in the morning and early afternoon programmes,
the spectators in the University of Sherbrooke stadium were treated to some
fine displays of athletic prowess in the first two sessions.

My athlete is there for the 200m. He is having the time of his life hanging out with Molly K and Glenroy G. It is a very encouraging environment for him. He races on the 12th, and is looking good judgign from what his last 80m time was (at 95%)…(I think it was 9.41 ht).
