Sun Angel Classic

The meet of the weekend belonged to the outstanding performances at the Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State. On the men’s side, Josh Walker of Florida nearly beat last year’s NCAA Champion in the 110 meter hurdles, Ron Bramlett. Walker clocked a personal best time of 13.50 while Ryan WIlson of USC was a close third in 13.53. Peter Etoot of Alabama got his season rolling in the 800 meters with his winning time of 1:47.71.

Ryan Wilson put his mark as one of the favorites in both hurdle races this season after coming back to take the 400’s while coming through first in 49.67. Dean Griffiths of Auburn was second in 49.72 and Dwight Ruff of Florida was third in 50.09.

Freshman Jeremy Wariner of Baylor ran exceptionally well at Sun Angel Stadium. In his first open 400 race since cramping up at the NCAA Indoor Championships almost a month ago, Wariner ran away with the title. He clocked a career-best time of 45.13 to win the first college heat, turn in the fastest time of the day and defeat World Champion Avard Moncur (45.50) who ran for Auburn Elite. Ricky Harris of Florida clocked 45.66, Darold Williamson of Baylor went 45.79 and Arizona State’s Lewis Banda finished in 46.01.

The 3000 meter steeplechase went to Mike Nicks of Colorado State who came through in 8:57.06. Jonah Maiyo of Central Arizona claimed the 1500 meters in 3:43.86 while Kip Kangogo of BYU was second in 3:44.65. Obed Mutanya of Central Arizona won the 5000 meters in 14:00.92.

The 4x400 meter relay went to Arizona State who clocked 3:04.44 and held off a strong Baylor team who was a close second in 3:04.68. Jeremy Wariner of Baylor took the baton with the team in third place and came through with a 43.79 split.

In the hammer throw, Drew Loftin of Colorado State won with his mark of 218-00 while teammate Brian Trainor claimed the discus with his throw of 193-07. Rob Minnitti of Boise State won the javelin with his toss of 234-11. The pole vault saw a good mark from Robison Pratt who cleared 18-02. Indoor triple jump champion Allen Simms won the long jump with his mark of 25-00.

Women’s results included mile indoor champion Johanna Nilsson of Northern Arizona taking the top collegiate spot in the 800 meters with her time of 2:05.43. Natasha Mayers of USC held off Auburn’s Elva Goulbourne in the 100 meters 11.31 to 11.44, respectively.

Kassi Andersen of BYU won a hot 1500 meters with her time of 4:20.52. Lisa Aguilera of Arizona State was a close second in 4:20.82. After taking second to Mayers in the 100, Goulbourne came back to edge her out in the 200 meters 22.98 while Mayers clocked 23.52.

The women’s hammer throw belonged to collegiate record holder Candice Scott of Florida. Scott’s throw of 217-03 held off Julianna Tudja of USC who had a mark of 211-01.

Sea Ray Relays

Most of the weekend action at the Sea Ray Relays suffered due to the weather as chilly, windy and rainy conditions dominated. Despite the conditions, there were some nice performances. The final day of action on Saturday saw the South Carolina men holding off Seton Hall in the 4x400 meter relay 3:04.94 to 3:05.31, respectively. South Carolina took the top collegiate time on the women’s side with their finish of 3:33.30. Trevor Snyder of Georgia showed up big time with his winning mark of 245-03 in the javelin.

Previous action during the week included Otis Harris of South Carolina holding off a strong field in the 400 meters to claim the long sprint in 45.76. Teammate Ken Ferguson broke 50 seconds in the 400 hurdles again by winning in 49.89. Jonathan Wade of Tennessee took advantage of his home track by winning the 100 meters in 10.39 (-1.0w) and 200 meters in 20.80 (-0.2w).

Deshaya Williams of Penn State took top collegiate honors in the discus with her mark of 175-05. Jesse Oconnell of Georgetown claimed victory in the 800 meters with his clocking of 1:47.97. In the women’s 800 meters, Kenia Sinclair of Seton Hall was the top collegian with her time of 2:06.42.

It was a hot 1500 meters for the men as Blake Boldon of SW Missouri State won with his time of 3:42.73. Ryan Hayden of Villanova was second in 3:43.53. Marina Muncan of Villanova won the women’s section of the 1500 meters as she came through in 4:23.82.

Four collegiate men threw over 200 feet in the hammer as the pair of Georgia Bulldogs dominated once again. Panagiotis Mavraganis and Lucais Mackay were the top two collegians as they threw 223-06 and 217-07, respectively. Spyridon Jullien of Virginia Tech had a mark of 217-07 while Ian Brewer of Georgia Tech finished with 203-02. NCAA Indoor weight throw champion Thomas Freeman of Manhattan won the event with his toss of 227-07. However, Freeman is redshirting the outdoor season and will not compete at the NCAA Championships.

For the first time coaching the Vols, Tennessee mentor Bill Webb pulled his Vol trio out of the decathlon as a precautionary measure because of the conditions. Mark Jellison of Connecticut ended up winning the event with his score of 7198. Hyleas Founta of Georgia was the top collegian in the heptathlon with her score of 5282. Both marks met the NCAA provisional standard in the events.

Miami Gatorade Classic

Several impressive marks were met at the Miami Gatorade Classic in Florida on Saturday. Lauryn Williams of Miami took home both sprint titles as she blazed to 11.27 and 23.25 in the 100 and 200 meters. Teammate Charlette Greggs opened up her 400 meter campaign with a winning time of 52.11. Another Hurricane, Patricia Pearson, claimed the 800 meters with her time of 2:06.49. Bente General of South Florida was victorious in the 1500 meters while coming through in 4:27.49.

The Miami women also ran a season-best time of 44.29 in the 4x100 meter relay. The women’s high jump went to Karol Rovelto of Kansas State who cleared 6-00.75 while the men’s high jump also went to a Wildcat as Kyle Lancaster jumped 7-03.25. Rebekah Green had a nice triple as the Kansas State Wildcat served up marks of 184-09 in the hammer, 53-01 in the shot put and 163-00 in the discus.

Seminole Invitational

At the Seminole Invitational, NCAA indoor champion Lacy Janson of Florida State won the pole vault with her height of 13-08.25. Sheldon Morant of Florida A&M ran 20.90 to win the 200 meters.

UTEP Invitational

Down in the southwest at the UTEP Invitational, Janne Sakko of UTEP was the top collegian in the javelin throw with his mark of 239-00. Mike Beasley of Texas Tech cleared over 7-feet again in the high jump with his winning height on less misses of 7-00.50. Teammate Chad Pharis also cleared the same height along with Henderson Dottin of UTEP. The men’s 4x100 meter relay went to the home track favorite UTEP as they clocked 39.29.

Texas Tech’s Licretia Sibley led the women’s sprint corps over the weekend at the UTEP Invitational. In the 400-meter dash the sophomore raced to a school-record time of 53.11 in placing first in the event. The Fort Worth, Texas, native then anchored the 4x400 relay team to its best finish of the year as well as the fifth-fastest finish in school history (3:36.95).

Pepsi Team Invitational

Oregon came away with the team titles on both sides on their home field at the Pepsi Team Invitational. Some of the highlights included Sara Gorton of Colorado winning the 1500 meters with her time of 4:19.77. Becky Holliday of Oregon took advantage of her home field as she won the pole vault by clearing 14-03.25. Shani Marks of Minnesota came up big in the triple jump with her leap of 44-10.25. Men’s highlights saw Mitch Potter of Minnesota taking the 400 meters while clocking 45.76. Teammate Mikael Jakobsson won the 400 meter hurdles with his time of 50.43.

John McDonnell Invitational

Arkansas was host to the John McDonnell Invitational as several impressive marks were met. Highlights included Ramon Washigton of Arkansas taking the long jump on his home turf while leaping 26-00.75. Marsha Dawkins of Oral Roberts won the women’s 400 meters with her time of 52.17. The men’s 400 meters went to Branimir Peitel of Northern Iowa with his showing of 46.19. A couple of Razorbacks had career best times in the 1500 meters. Alistair Cragg took first place with a career-best time of 3:39.24 while teammate James Hatch improved his career-best by nearly five seconds when he came in second with 3:41.76. Robbie Stevens led the Razorbacks as he crossed the line in second with a career-best time of 1:47.71 in the 800 meters.

Barton CC saw several of their athletes shine as well. Erick Wilson claimed the 100 meters with his wind-aided (+2.3) time of 10.14. LaShauntea Moore took the sprints double while winning the 100 meters in 11.33 and the 200 meters in 23.09. Wilson then came back to win the 200 meters with his wind-legal time of 20.44. Teammate Steven Mullings was second in 20.52.

Tom Botts Invitational

Tthe University of Missouri played host to the Tom Botts Invitational as action got started on Friday. Tameisha King of Notre Dame won the long jump with her leap of 20-10.75. Luke Watson of Notre Dame made his season debut in the steeplechase with his time of 8:53.07. Russ Bell of Missouri broke the school record in the hammer throw with his winning mark of 194-10.

Saturday’s action saw Gina Rickert of Iowa State win the high jump while clearing 6-00.75. Jesse Sims of Missouri took the men’s high jump with his leap of 7-02.50.

LSU Alumni Gold

It was a day full of Tigers once again at the LSU Alumni Gold over the weekend. Muna Lee and Stephanie Durst both cracked 23 seconds in the 200 meters as Lee clocked 22.74 and Durst went 22.86. Hazel-Ann Regis sprinted to a 51.54 in the 400 meters. The lady Tigers showed their low-altitude collegiate record last week at the Texas Relays was no joke in the 4x100 meter relay as the quartet of Stephanie Durst, Monique Hall, Lolo Jones and Muna Lee won the event in 43.19.

The field events saw John Moffitt leap to a mark of 25-08.00 in the long jump. Nicole Toney was the top collegian in the triple jump with her mark of 44-03.25. Cedric Norman of Southern Miss claimed the high jump with his clearance of 7-02.25.

Texas A&M Invitational

The Aggies were host to the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday as several nice performances were put in. Jerome Bertoluzzi of SMU took top honors in the hammer throw with his mark of 209-08. Texas once again took aim and controlled the sprinting events as Nichole Denby won the 100 meter hurdles in 13.11 while teammate Raasin McIntosh was second in 13.23. Chris Pinnock of Texas A&M is getting back to true form after posting his winning time of 13.60 in the 110 meter hurdles. Brandon Simpson of TCU took the 400 meters while crossing the line in 46.49.

Ole Miss Invitational

Mississippi was host to the Ole Miss Invitational which produced several noteable marks. Hometown favorite Kendrick Triggs of Ole Miss was victorious in the 200 meters with his time of 20.92 into a slight headwind reading of -0.7. Another Rebel, Antwon Hicks, had to deal with the headwind as well but still managed to claim the 110 meter hurdles in 13.69 with a reading of -0.8. Teammate Stacy Andrews won the discus with his mark of 185-01.

All-Ohio Championships

Ohio State hosted the two-day All-Ohio Championships as the Buckeyes took home both the men’s and women’s team titles. Highlight’s included Peter Weisz of Kent State winning the 3000 meter steeplechase with his time of 8:56.47. It was another Dan Taylor weekend as the senior took both the shot put (65-06.25), hammer throw (204-06) and discus (180-08) titles. All-American Adriane Blewitt of Ashland took the women’s shot put with her toss of 57-03.75 while teammate Jackie Jeschelnig won the hammer throw with her mark of 204-08.

Charlotte Invitational

The Charlotte 49ers hosted the Charlotte Invitational which saw Jamaal Torrance of St. Augustine’s College take the 400 meters in 46.58. Teammate Anwar Moore won the 110 meter hurdles in 13.81 while facing a fierce headwind reading of -2.1.

Phil Esten Challenge

Andrew Rock of Division III Uw-La Crosse ran 45.73 to win the 400 meters at the Phil Esten Challenge.
