Tim Benjamin season's best

Tim Benjamin gave himself another lift ahead of the European Championships with his fastest 400m time of the year at a meeting in Thessalonika, Greece.

The Welshman clocked 45.40 seconds to finish second just 0.11s behind winner American Jamal Ashley.

It built on his 45.61 time in Heusden, Holland, on Friday and his AAAs trials win in Manchester two weeks ago.

Benjamin next runs at the London Grand Prix on Friday with the European finals in Gothenburg starting on 7 August.

Last year he caused a sensation when beating American Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner over one lap at the same Crystal Palace event.

British middle distance runner Jo Pavey is also set to run at Crystal Palace after organisers brought in a 3000m race which suits her preparations for Gothenburg.
