Stellenbosch, RSA - 14Jan06

14 January 2006 - Shot-putter Janus Robberts, who had a lean year in 2005 when he failed to record any distance at the World Championships in Finland, booked his seat on the plane to the Commonwealth Games in Australia in March, when he recorded a fine 20.49m at the opening meeting in the resurfaced Coetzenburg Stadium on Friday.
Various overseas athletes, who are training in the Stellenbosch region, were also in action. Robberts was the pick of the evening and he also erased the provincial shot put record of 19.81m set by John van Reenen 25 years ago.

The pole vault for men and women were two feature events at the meeting but no South Africans succeeded to record victories. Germany’s Tim Lobinger, won the pole vault with a height of 5.50m while Kirsten Belin of Sweden’s 4.10m was good enough for a first place in the women’s contest.

Okkert Brits, like Lobinger a 6m vaulter, started the year on a disappointing note when he failed to clear his opening height.
