I have read a few sprinting articles and i have come to a conclusion that sprinting only has two phases acceleration and maintaining momentum…How do you all feel about my conclusion…And in further details sprinters are trying to accelerate to top speed as quickly as possible and they are trying to maintain the momentum they have achieved through the acceleration phase and thats as simple as it gets…
Based on your conclusion, what would your strategy be for the 200m and 400m?
Accelerate. Then maintain momentum.

I don’t see how you can accelerate and then maintain in longer sprints as you describe. Are you accelerating to top speed or pace speed? If it is to a pace speed and then you maintain that pace until you are close to finished, that would make sense. But if you were to accelerate to full speed and maintain as long as possible, you might not even finish – especially in the 4. I’ve always thought that in the 4, you get out fast and relaxed for 50 or so and then relax until you are in the final turn where you expend additional energy to maintain and then try to hold on for the final 100 or so.
