Spilt runs for the beginner

Hey CF when performing spilt runs each set suppose to equal one special end rep not each individual rep. If this is so, should we decrease the spilt run distance in the graphs for athletes who may only be able to acc out to 30-40m? For example if we have an athlete who can only acc out to 40m, his spilt runs should only go out to 40m vs. 60. For this athlete each 60m run would equal one special end rep since he’s only able to acc out to 40m.

Each set is one unit as you say. You don’t have to stick with 40m, they simply accel to 40m and maintain to 60.

Ikh can you expand?

Sorry, I didn’t read it carefully enough. The accel distance isn’t as important as the time of each part of the split run. So, no a 60 isn’t considered a set. 2 x 60 walk back break would be one type.

CF if we are using half the volume on the graphs would this also apply to the spilt runs also? I think the athlete should be able to handle the full spilt run volume since the overall intensity is lower?

The answer is to try it out and see what you think. I find you still have to decrease volume even if they are slower.

Thats what I’m saying: a split run is mostly equivalent to the total distance in a set. 2X3X60 is more like 2X200; 2x2X60 would be more like 2X120. If a athlete is able to accelerate to more like 30-40m than 60, you might start with, say, 3X3 or 3X4, but with the reps being 40m instead of 60. If they would need an acceleration limit below 60, then each individual rep to 60 in the workout is going to be SE, which is not really the objective. The whole set is supposed to be SE, not each individual rep.

Thanks TopCat.

Do Glen Mills, stephen francis and JD really use this type of “stuff.”

Tamb, im confused - are you or your guys running all out in these 60m SE efforts?? Ie, running out to 40m hard then hanging on? As in Wks 5-12 where the acc distance is 40-60m?

Didnt Cf mention some time before that for the slower or as you say, up to 40m acc people, then just Acc at a slower pace. Ie, 60m being elite, then 40m for your guy is around 30% less than elite. So, acc zone limits can either be dropped 30% or
hit 40m acc limit at a slower than max limit. After all, the elite are hitting it sub max, so why hit it at max for the slower guy. Still acc out to 40m, just not all out.
Then when the graphs says, acc out to 60m, that is where your guy hits the 60m mark at your guys Max speed. So, instead of hitting 40m at max speed like he can, he delays it till 60m.

Hope it makes sense??
