OSLO, June 15 (Reuters) - World 100 metres record holder Asafa Powell cruised to victory with a time of 9.94 seconds on Friday in the first Golden League meeting of the season.
Jamaican Powell burst out of the blocks and led all the way to beat Francis Obikwelu of Portugal, who clocked 10.06 seconds, and Nigeria’s Olusoji Fasuba who finished in 10.25.
It was the 27th sub-10 second race of Powell’s career and the victory at Oslo’s Bislett Games set him on his way to the $1 million jackpot that goes to an athlete who wins all six of his or her Golden League events.
Powell, who set the world record of 9.77 seconds in 2005, shared last year’s jackpot with American 400 metre runners Jeremy Wariner and Sanya Richards.
The next Golden League competition is on July 6 in Paris.
