Asafa Powell’s injury status - ‘hopeful’
Thursday 28 June 2007
Kingston, Jamaica – The status of the fitness of World 100m record holder Asafa Powell who was injured in the process of winning the Jamaican title last Saturday (23), has now been confirmed.
Powell injured his groin during the 100 metre final after showing discomfort from mid-way in the race but persisted with his dash and crossed the line in 10.04 seconds (+1.0 m/s wind), but then immediately lay flat on his back for about three minutes.
“It’s still 50/50 right now,” confirmed his manager Paul Doyle about Powell’s chance of racing at his next planned outing in the Paris leg of the IAAF Golden League next week (Friday 6 July)
Doyle, commenting in a telephone interview from his Atlanta-based home, continued -
“We really have to see how he is doing towards the end of the weekend.”
“We are still going to head to Europe and hopefully he will still be able to run in Paris,” continued Doyle, who said Powell had been “doing better” since Tuesday.
“He (Powell) is not willing to risk anything in Osaka… if he is going to jeopardize his health, which will prevent him from running in Osaka … then he won’t run.”
Powell is schedule to resume training today (Thursday 28 June).
This is shame. I remember hearing that once this area is injured it always rears its ugly head especially once the training volumes/intensity are increased slightly. This must be upsetting for him as he still has to prove he’s the real deal on the world stage…
I’m having problems in this area myself. Never used to…Now the problem has flared up 3 times in the last 2 months…started in the groin area and has moved downwards towards the adductor/quad.
Thanks TC…I’m due to see my physio this weekend…Hopefully she can diagnose the problem…its frustrating because I was coming into good form in training again…I felt the pain in the area yesterday during a blocks session…First 3/4 runs were fine…as I cam out of the accel (drive phase) and got upright I felt it…
i’d like to ask charlie has his athletes ever had any probs in this area and if so what was the plan of action to treat and prevent it from occuring again?
EMS + massage cured most of my problems in that area. Lie facedown, leg out to the side, and put the foam roller parallel to your spine. It can hit the groin pretty well. EMS also does a good job with the upper quads if you tend to strain them right around the hip.
You would think that being the worlds fastest man, and having a large group of some fast people, he would have access to the best regenerative methods available, as Charlie made available to his athletes
true, and we dont know all the factors at play. But how many serious injuries did ben have at his peak, that werent from being forced to run on a unprepared track. A very limited amount.
whats to say groin 2005 wasn’t from over racing. and the earlier knee problems this year were over use. ect. and now this new groin problem is just a flare up of the old injury.
you have to keep in mind that ben is not a full case study, he never ran his absolute best possible time and didn’t have a full career. you can probably list his peak, at least from a shortened career, from 87 to 88, so its just not enough to know if he was going to blow a hammy in 89 or anything.
Trust me Powell does have some of the best regeneration specialists in the world at his hands as does the entire MVP camp. Ben had 2 major hamstring injuries in his career (according to Speed Trap at least) and he was arguably in the form Powell has been in only 2 seasons, so like dnasty said, not the best example.
How about Mo Greene? John Smith is a great coach based on his results and what every other coach says, but his athletes have had their share of injuries. They have pretty darn good regeneration specialists too (or did at least).
Last season (all through Aus and Europe) and for a time this season it was/has been Dr. Bill Tullock, though I haven’t heard anything the last 2 weeks about who is with him. They also have a full time massage therapist.
