Charlie has said previously that Hi-GI drinks like Gaterade etc should be confined to one day a week on a short to long program, and the reccommends the use of BCAAs (during), protein drink (after) other sessions.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- use a high GI product ony after the most intense workouts on your schedule- level 5 on a scale of 1 to 5.
Level 5 workouts are exhausting during and after execution and they suppress the appetite and keep blood in the muscles and out of the digestive tract for a prolonged period, making it difficult to get the nutrition required to the muscles in a timely fashion through normal food.
Most sprint programs only have one such session per week. [Charlie Francis]
But lets say an athlete is doing a long to short program which invlolves more than one SE session a week AND intensive tempo.
How should post-workout protocols for nutrition be changed then? Is it then ok to consume more hi-GI drinks then? 1/2/3 times per week.
I know people here don’t face this issue as tend to favour a CFTS approach. But lets say an athlete came to you on such a program - what advice would you give???
It shouldn’t matter how many you have per week. You need hi GI drinks when you are fatigued. Also, consider refeeds 1-2 times per week. This is where you eat an insane amount of hi GI carbs up to 6 hours post workout.
I refer not to extensive tempo but intensive tempo sessions and speed endurance/ special endurance sessions more than once per week.
This is just an example, but say an athlete on a program like the Baylor Program, where there is many endurance sessions in one week. On such a program should these guys be restricting themselves to just low GI food post WO?
How should the protocols provided on the forum be adjusted for a different program?
