Are custom orthotics supposed to be worn in neutral shoes?
What specifically do you mean by “neutral”?
There are three major types of joggers for different feet: Neutral, Motion-Control, and Support. Google it.
Yeah I just mean shoes that don’t offer any motion control or have their own built in arch support.
Okay. That’s what I figured, but I wanted to be sure. Personally I do wear custom orthotics with arch support shoes. Specifically I wear the Saucony Triumph, which was recommended to me by Mike Forgrave who made my orthotics. I imagine it’s a matter of individual need. Mike obviously thought I needed the extra support from the shoe in addition to the orthotics. I guess the best person to ask is your orthotics specialist.
Really… that’s intriguing…wouldn’t that be over-correcting ?
Not in my case. I think the Triumph just provides stronger support to the arch rather than correcting per se. Mike Forgrave is the one to ask. I was simply following his recommendation, which thus far has worked wonderfully.
I usually tell patients to get neutral shoes with their orthotics. Orthotics should be custom-made for the individual and any further correction by the shoegear would be over-correcting.
