my coach doesnt know what speed work really is!

Vinnie,

Before you offer to take over programing for Tim Montgomery’s training, 11.9 and 23.9 you have run under your own training so far this spring, is nothing that your coach wouldnt have gotten you to if not even better times.

I say this because I know your coach.
He is a great man and as you describe, flexible enough to allow you to pursue your desired training program. But to compare him to the coach that the lady D3 sprinter describes is at best flawed and impunes the reputation of a good coach.

College athletics, certainly at the D3 level is as much about letting the student athlete learn as anything else, and I would imagine that this is what is taking place here. Further confirmation of my guess would be if you are a PE major?

Coach Mdd,
My name is Jason Jackson. Once again, my name is Jason Jackson. My personal bests this season in the 100 is 10.81 and 21.90 (indoors). I am not Vinne Mazaferro. Get it straight. Look on Springfield’s website if you need more clarification. Thats great that you know my coach but let me ask you, how many great sprinters has he coached? None. How many great throwers, jumpers, and distance runners has he coached. Alot. He is strong in those areas. I did do his program when I first came to Springfield. Having your sprinters run 6-8 miles a day, or what about 4x600, 2x800, and 1000? You don’t personally know me so there for it is irrelevant to imply that I would have gotten the same results on his program when the next best sprinters who are just as talented, are running a half second to a second slower! Thanks for your opinion but get the facts straight.
Jason Jackson aka Vincente.

Coach Mudd,
I almost fogot to respond to your last question. I am not a PE major. In fact I am declared in Exercise Science and am pursuing a career in Strength and Conditioning. There are things that I learn in the class room that my coach has yet to learn.
Jason Jackson

zoom100,
What do you mean?

Charlie, what would the schedule look like with meets on virtually every Saturday and an occasional Wednesday meet? Should the special endurance runs occur on Wednesdays during the weeks that there are no meets on that day? Most meets on Saturdays as stated above.

Flash,
So did you train on your own and then just sign up for meets in college?

i guess that is waht i am just going to have to do, learn alot and then try to compromise with my coach. but i dont know how well that will go, because like Flash said most coaches would feel insecure about something like that. but if i learn enough maybe i can bring up some valuable points. which may lead him to reconsider what he is doing and wake him up. i tried this the other day and i was surprised to see he took what i was saying into account and modified the workout. so i guess that is a start!

NewTrack365,
I’ve actually never read much of this thread, because I’m not a 400 guy but everybody always makes references to it, so I imagine it has some good stuff:

When there are meets 2x/week, the meets are the special end.

thanks for the link pete, ill check it out!

My question was are Wednesdays a good day to do the sp. end. work sandwiched between Saturday meets(1 meet per week not two) with NO meets on the weekdays or would Tuesday be a better day? The Wednesday meets are rare and on those occasions we do not do spec. end. work as the meets certainly represent that type of work. Thanks.

Just came off Thursday meet followed by two consecutive tempo days since athletes had not recovered well enough to do speed session today(Saturday). Have to take off Sunday for rest(high school athletes). Question for Charlie, we have major meet coming up next Saturday what should the weekly breakdown look like this week? Example Mon. special endurance. Tues.-tempo. Wed. speed. Thurs.-tempo. Friday-rest. Sat.-meet. Will this work? What would work better? Just one special endurance run for 400 and 800 runners this week or two? Two more meets in season including next Saturday and the following Saturday.

The pattern looks OK and I’d choose one Special End run at this point in the season. The meets wil take care of the rest.

Thanks Charlie-I appreciate the input.
