The Associated Press
Reviving a Cold War tradition, Russian and American athletics teams contested Russia’s Challenge – a head-to-head track and field meet on Saturday.
In a reversal of the last two years, American sprinters led the United States to victory over Russia.
Saturday’s competition was the third revised edition of meets from 1958-82, dubbed the “Match of the Giants” or “Match of the Continents.”
The United States and Russia split the 10 events, but the visitors won 98.5-93.5 at the one-day meet.
Olympic 200-meter champion Shawn Crawford won the 100 in 10.15 seconds, beating countrymen Wallace Spearmon and Rodney Martin.
American Stephanie Durst won the women’s 100 with a time of 11.28, bettering Yulia Gushchina by 0.06, and Natalya Rusakova by 0.07.
European champion Lyudmila Kolchanova won the long jump with a leap of 7.01 meters.
World champion Julia Nosova-Pechonkina clocked 53.14 to win the women’s 400 hurdles, beating Lashinda Demus and Sandra Glover of the United States.
Yaroslav Rybakov won the high jump with a height of 2.30 meters, besting countryman Ivan Ukhov and American Jamie Nieto, who finished third.
Khadevis Robinson of the United States ran a time of 1 minute, 47.52 seconds to win the 800, which was without Olympic champion Yury Borzakovsky. Ivan Nesterov and Dmitry Bogdanov got silver and bronze respectively.
Two-time Olympic silver medalist Terrence Trammel won the 110 hurdles in 13.44, 0.06 ahead of Ron Bramlett, with Igor Peremota finishing third.
