Kenteris crowns debut

Greek sprint hero Costas Kenteris capped off a successful debut for the Athens Olympic Stadium on Thursday by taking the national title in the 100 metres. The Olympic 200 metres champion, considered to be Greece’s best chance of a track gold at the August 13-29 Games, streaked home in 10.18 seconds.

“Form and fitness permitting I’m hoping for the top spot,” Kenteris told reporters.

It was Kenteris’s first competitive run for a year and his first outing at 100 metres since 2001.

Prior to its closure two years ago, the Athens track was considered among the fastest in the world.

Top U.S. sprinter Maurice Green broke the world 100 metre record at the 1999 Athens grand prix.

Teething troubles and a 0500 local time start for many competitors meant moderate performances in most events.

The three-day Greek track and field championships is the showpiece of the domestic athletics calendar.

The event also acts as an Olympic trial, although selectors have broad discretion on who will make the final team for August, officials said.
