In Season lifting

Nah not really, my main compeition is in the month of april. My only REAL lifting days are going to be Tuesday and Thursday. With the supplemental hamstring work on Mondays and Fridays. If I got a meet, I’ll probably taper my lifting off if its within 2 days and if its within 1 I probably won’t bother lifting at all.

Was this PB Bench Press done before or after the 9.79? Between heats?

Have you read speed trap?
I know you were in Vancouver and I’m pretty sure you were awake during this discussion.

(before the 100m started, as part of the final taper)

OK. I was just to busy to read speed trap again. I know I am pushing it a little bit but how much before? 1 day before, 1 hour before, 30 min?

Were there any weights on the track?

Four days before the final for the bench.

how would i incorporate olympic lifts inseason?

Question for Charlie. Did you ever use any back oriented lifts such as pulldowns/pull-ups/rows(that could possibly activate a large number of m-u’s similar to a bench) in the same stimulatory role that you did with benches?

Bumping it.

And again.

we did do pulldowns and some rows BUT the point of the last minute stimulus was to use muscles that would be LEAST used in the event (sprinting is pulling and not pushing) to save the muscles needed for the event so late in the time-frame while still allowig for a great stimulus. This was another arguement for a general lifting plan.

Sprinting is pulling?!

I thought it’s more of a “pushing activity”

So the pulldowns/rows could be used in a stimulatory role but would not be used( in the same context) as close to meet day as the benches would be, correct?

bumping it.

If you move them further out vs. the bench press, will you have the same/any stimulatory effect?

Good question. Further, how many more days before the target comp., can you move such lifts in a program while still providing some measure of m-u stimulation? This while avoiding over-taxing the more directly sprint involved pulling muscles.

Do you even want a stimulus of the MUs used by sprinting this close to a target race? My understanding of the principle involved is that you use the bench to provide a general CNS stimulus while NOT taxing any of the MUs directly connected with sprinting. If so, you would presumably leave the sprinting dependent MUs at maintenance.

Charlie, for those of us doing indoors now, thus more likely a 5-day taper than a 10-day taper, would you consider doing the bench (only) session 3 days out, or is that too close?

Think of the arms here. As for a cue for the sprinting itself, think "up and down’ rather than pushing or pulling.

The higher the stimulus, the longer the period, therefore the stronger you are, the farther back the stimulus should be. For most, bench 2 to 3 days out should work best.

That’s why I like a general lifting program. Since the stimulus must be close enough to optimally stimulate race readiness, you may not have the flexibility to move the lift too far back, putting you at a greater risk of a specific injury.
