I am a rugby player. I have a plated ankle from a broken ankle last summer. I’m slowly introducing running work and I plan to start sprint training a month later after a few months of nothing but heavy strength training and a lot of GPP orientated training.
The plates would be removed this summer and it my doctor said I could start sprinting. My question is will I develop bad sprintining mechanics or strange recruitment patterns from sprinting on the plated ankle? When the plates are removed this summer, would I experience a shock? Also can the plates and screws in my ankle break due to some nasty accidents during training or is my ankle unbreakable for now?
Currently the range of motion is decent. I can do Oly squats with a slight burning feeling in my tibialis anterior and heels wanting to lift up (both on left foot, the ankle I broke). When I did the untilateral squat test for flexibility, my heels also feel like coming off the floor.
I am stretching my calves daily and strengthing my tibialis anterior now through a variety of exercises like reverse calf raise.
So should I start sprint training once I regained complete painfree range of motion and optimal flexibility in my tibialis anterior and calves or should I avoid sprint training until I have the plates removed?
Thanks for your time
