Being Scottish, I thought I would share on our traditional meal for Burns Nicht. The 25th January, is Burns day, and traditional meal for that day is Haggis and Neeps (turnips or swede’s).
Just incase there are any other Scottish members, you will be glad to know, I did not let the side down and had my big helping of Haggis and neeps.
For my non-Scottish members, Haggis is a Traditional dish made from… well just put it like this, there is not much from a sheep that doesn’t go into it.
Sounds awful - but tastes great.
Unfortunately, it will only add to my already growing winter warmer (fat layer).
being born on Burns´birthday, I am familiar with and love haggis! I don´t get it too often though! I have lived in Austria now for about 8 years, and 2 years ago I had a Scottisch skier bring over a couple of cans when he went home for Christmas ( not the best, but better than none!). I also play the pipes, but living here in an apartment, I am a bit reluctant to practice. I get the chanter out, but don´t do much with the pipes. Not everyone is a fan, and you can´t really turn the volume down when piping!
Have you read any of Burns´ poetry? Some of it is pretty damn lewd!
Willie,
How about some slice and blood pudding to top off your haggis feast. My father was born in Greenock. Even he had to admit you guys eat some pretty strange stuff. Screw the people. WAIL the Pipes!!! Anyone that can’t appreciate the pipes needs to hear more of them!
I’m actually quarter Scottish myself. However, I don’t really know much about Scottish traditions, I have never tried haggis or played the bagpipes. My Grandmother was born in Glasgow, and is a proud lady, very proud of her heritage. Always wearing a kilt!
It could prove useful having that Scottish blood in me though, as the Scottish commonwealth team has got to be far easier to make than the English or Australian team. Last year the Scottish title was won in 10.50 seconds for 100m, but it was a very wet day at Scotstoun Stadium.
“You know, Scotland has its own martial art. It’s called Fuk-Yew! It’s mostly head butting and then kicking the guy when he’s on the ground.” - Mike Myers So I Married an Axe Murderer
true story, before i got married my roomate mark and i had a “at home industrial” deep fryer and we deep fired everything. we herd about the mars bar thing and just had to try it and yes, its amazing!!!
as good as they were, nothing came close to deep fried peanut butter and jam sandwiches!!!
While I was doing my grad degree I had a good friend form Scotland and his culinary habits were at times shocking.
Oorwullie - is it really common for people over there to take a slice of bread and use it to sop up all the fat and grease from a frying pan after frying eggs, or whatever? He loved this and claimed this was common practice back home.:o
Not just in Scotland Carson - I can remember my Dad talking about eating bread and dripping -
animal fat sandwiches - how disgusting is that - and he was a top class rower too
