Charlie,
I have just started with a high level gymnastics academy who are interested in improving vaulting speed and punch strength on floor, vault etc. Several are division 1 NCAA scholarship athletes and one just competed in a recent national competition against Olympic level gymnasts.
My main concern is creating a balance of training components required for each event and adding the additional medball, sprint work etc with me.
Considering they train hard for 5 hours a day, I don’t feel adding 10-20 med ball squat throws, some resisted sprints, power speed, box jumps into pits and 20 yd sprint work a few days a week would do much harm.
Also, I feel punch strength can be improved through medball throws. Since they do a ton of upper body strength work, adding that probably isn’t going to work.
I have never worked with athletes on such bouncy floors. Anything I’m might miss besides the obvious differences in speed on surface hardness? Potential long term injuries?
I’m wondering if I may be missing something from a thought process standpoint. Any comments, suggestions or thoughts?
