100 semis
It was cold, wet and there was a headwind, very bad conditions to sprint in. I had the easier heat so I was feeling confident going in. I had a great start for once and was leading halfway through but I ran very poorly in the better part of my race and ended up 2nd in my heat with an 11.77, first was 11.74 and I was 4th so it’s very tight, a lishgt headwind (-1.2) was in the race.

100 finals
About 10 minutes before this race things started to heat up and I was ready to go. I had my usual poor start, better then the finals last week but still behind the majority of the field. I came back in the end and passed the 2 guys that beat me last week, to end this race in 2nd with an 11.74 into a -2.8 wind.

200 semis
I got some new spikes right before this race and have to say they helped a lot, replacing my old defective and uncomfortable spikes. I had the easier heat again in the 200 and basically again sprinted about 50 meters total. I ran the straight at about 90% but I started laughing for some reason when I rounded the end of the curve. I eased up at the end a little too much and came 2nd by 0.01 but all I wanted was to be top 2 in the heat so I could get an inside lane in the finals so whatever. My time was 23.57 into a -2.0 which shows that I’ve come along way in one week where I ran almost the same time into the same wind in the finals last week.

200 finals
We had a very big wind against us in this race, I could feel it blowing on me while in set. I ran a very slow curve and was well back of everyone, someone told me I was 6th off the curve. I had loads of energy on the straight and finished very strong in getting myself into 3rd but I know I could have ran a much better race cause I left too much in the tank. I ran a 23.33 into a -4.0 wind so basically I’m capable of running 22s high and maybe even getting close to mid 22s if I can run a better curve.

4x100 relay
Our first leg didn’t run very strong and I got the baton back of the top team we were aginst. By the time I ran my leg we were in 1st place. Our anchor got the baton in 1st but got ran down by the top team’s anchor who came 4th in both individual sprints. However that team got DQed because of a bad handoff and we ended up first overall. Our time wasn’t very good at 46.12 but it was good enough for 1st and it’s next week that matters.

A solid day, I think my 100 will drop further with my new spikes that don’t have a broken plate and once I can put 2 halves of a race together. I’ll need it next week in Belleville to try and make OFSAA.

whats your best 40m handtimes in practice?

Never timed them before. I’d guess like mid / low 5 something. It’s not only my start mechanics and power that blow, cause at least before I had great reaction out of the blocks but even that’s gone to shit lately.

Heading out for East Regionals tomorow afternoon. I have the relay tomorow and the 100 and 200 the day after.

Our relay team is ranked 6th I believe so we have a chance to qualify as top 4 do and we ran a very poor race last week.

My 100 is ranked 4th I believe but ours was ran into a wind. I’m looking as a goal to come 2nd or 3rd but hopefully I can break off my OFSAA 100m jinx. Thanks to bad races I haven’t qualified for OFSAA in the 100 ever.

My 200 is ranked 7th. There is a very strong field in the 200 but again, my race was ran into a very strong wind last week plus I ran a crappy curve. My goal is to come top 4 in this. 1st and 2nd are 2 very good runners who I can’t compete with and then there are 2 others guys that are probably a little better then me, but it’s all about who shows up.

My friend, who is all but guaranteed top 4 in both sprints will not be going to OFSAA so all I need is top 5 in each to get in. Looking forward to putting down some nice times if the weather / wind permits.

Wow, it feels good to finally exceed expectations. First time I have since I ran 11.63 last summer. I’m feeling great other then my legs which barely supported me on the walk into my house.

East Regionals

4x100 relay - We had a shot to qualify for this if we had a very good race. It was a very nice day when we ran this (other 4 races were the next day). Our lead runner ran a decent leg and I got the baton 2nd. My leg was absolute crap and I couldn’t gain on a guy who would later not break 11.60 in the 100. By the time our anchor got it we were in 6th place and were out of it. Kind of a disapointing race but our fastest of the year at 45.85, look forward to running the relay next year.

100 semis - It was raining but it was a nice temperature outside and no wind, maybe a slight tailwind; other then the rain that went away after this race that’s basically the weather all day. In this race I had a decent start. Other then the better runners (the ones that made the final) I was ahead of everyone. I ended up coming back in the end to finish 2nd in my heat in a time of 11.35 which got me pumped.

100 finals - I was ready for this race. I knew this was basically my only shot at OFSAA. My warmp up was perfect and I knew I was gonna run fast. I got out of the blocks very slowly, behind pretty much everyone and my first thought when I lifted my head was that I’m not gonna make OFSAA. Good thing I didn’t panic too much cause I closed big on pretty much the whole field. I made up ground to get into 4th, the last qualifying spot and I missed 3rd by 0.01 which is too bad, but with my surprising time of 11.15   I was very happy. That’s a 4 tenth PB today and all I needed was some good coniditions to run in.

200 semis - Was not looking forward to this race. I was dead tired cause it was a half hour after my 100. I took the corner out slow and was 6th off the corner and well back of the top 3. I pulled up into 4th but it was a struggle and my legs felt like they weighed 100 lbs each during the run. I ran 23.35 but I know that was because my legs were drained from my 100s and the huge warmups I ended up doing for them. I had nothing left and ended up qualifying last for the finals so I knew I was in tough.

200 finals - A half hour after the semis and an hour after the 100 finals, I really don’t like who came up with this schedule. I did 1 accel for the warmup cause I was too tired to get off the ground. I was dead last off the curve and couldn’t really gain any ground. A pathetic race that I ran 23.58 in and came 8th. That makes it the 3rd year in a row I’ve ended my highschool 200 with a last place finish. It was hard to walk back to get my stuff after this race. I definately need some lactic work, cause it was damn hard to run those 200s today.

All in all, my 100 time is enough to make up for my poor 200 showing. I’m happy I could get that drop in a PB and I’ve met the Junior National standard in the 100 now too.

congrats on the 100- good luck at ofsaa

Excellent results!!! You keep saying your start is slow, maybe their is room to go faster???

Seeing as you got such a huge pb, their is potential for injury so take it easy for the next few days IMO.

Oh and out of curiousity what did the winner of your 100m and 200m get?

I have had shitty thoughts like this too while running definately not good…lol. They are definately not going to help you run as fast as you can, but it was good to see you didn’t stay like that for the whole race.

Oh and I forgot to ask did you get the wind readings for the 11.15 and 11.35? Would be very good for you if the 11.15 was into -1.0 or something like that.

Both the 100 and 200 finals were with a +0.6 wind. The 100 champion ran 10.80, a very fast guy that came out of nowhere this year. The 200 champ ran 21.61 and he’s basically the favorite to win OFSAA in the 200 and 400, there was a very good 200 field at regionals. Here’s the results http://www.recorder.ca/tisspiratestcc/eastregionals2006.htm

And thanks TJ2K

ofsaa should be a good competition …we have guys in the south west who were running in pouring rain and freezing cold but pypers 400 time is pretty sick…the ofsaa record could be in contention if the weather is good.

Ya, I know Adam Johnson and Jon Reid will be up there in the 400 as well. The new OFSAA record is 48.44 so Pyper’s already got the record I guess.

new ofsaa records dont mean shit.
im talking about the old one which is like 46.hi

Back from OFSAA

Not a great weekend for me and my group. Nobody from my group made the sprint finals including a girl who was expected to challenge for a medal.

My race seemed fine 10 meters in, then everyone pulled away. I was dead last at 50. I did come back to finish 6th in my heat and, bleh, 18th overall with a time of 11.39, but I was not relaxed at all and definately did not have my top gear going at the end of the race. For the first time this year I actually was able to have a non-race related thought during my race, which definately would not happen going at full speed. I needed to relax too but the pressure of being at provincials got to me, my coach thought I might have blown a blood vessel during the race. I never expected to make the finals, it would have taken a sub 11 to do so, but I should have run an 11.1x for sure if I ran a better race.

There was an upset in the finals as 2 time OFSAA champion Tyrone Halstead came 2nd to a guy named Nathan Riva who came out of nowhere this year and dropped his PB by like .7

Next up for me is Legions in 2 weeks. Will be interesting to run against some of the very fast Junior runners, especially now that Justyn Warner’s little bro just broke 11.

how about that 400???

holy crap 3 guys go sub 48??

the top two seeds ended up with 4th/5th running low 48’s

and Riva…well, if u saw him last year and some him this year <cough, cough> u would understand why hes that much better…better example would be looking at his 4x1 which ran 41.9, look at the ‘size’ they all put on…

i waqs expecting faster 100 times tho…

Headwind in the finals

And ya I’ve heard the talk about Riva as well. Seeing as Tyrone beat him by like .5 last year and he isn’t part of a club or anything I’m believing it.

And the 400 was a kickass race, the first 200 it looked like Todd was gonna run away with it. Then at 300 it looked like Jonathon Reid was gonna win. Then they both died and the 3 guys all pulled ahead. I thought Adam Johnson got it at the line but he was edged out. Best 400 I’ve ever seen live.

Legion Qualifyers

Wow, what a sad, sad day. So much for optimism.

100 heat
I was pumped going into the heats. I had a new start that I was trying and it worked well because I got out with another guy who has a very good start. He was slightly ahead of me as my Max-V didn’t feel solid and I just broke off my race and eased in about 30 meters from the line because the genius who made the schedule had the finals 20 minutes after the heats. I ran the race in 11.51 but probably would have been 11.2x based on how far back I was.

100 finals
I’ve had some bad starts before, but nothing compares to this one. I was behind a 12 flat runner that is a 200 runner at 40 and when I lifted my head and saw 2 guys about 4 meters up on me I knew it was done. Top 2 make it to Legion Provincials and I just gave up to almost a walk about 30 meters from the line and ran 11.66, which probably would have been an 11.4 low if I ran through. Both 100s were basically still wind.

200 finals
I thought I’d be able to redeem myself here and maybe finally run a sub 23, which I still haven’t done and this used to be my best event. I took the curve out slow, I thought I took it out decently but maybe I could have gone a little harder. I closed a little on the top 2 guys but was too far back. I thought I ran a decent time and was closer to the winner then I was but turns out my time was 23.27, meaning I still haven’t beaten my PB. There was a sizeable wind on the curve but I’m still very disapointed with the result.

Very bad day, 2 3rd places means I’m not going to Legion Provincials even though I did last year competing against older people  . The 2nd place guy did say he isn’t going so hopefully that will put me in for the 100 and 200 and hopefully I’ll be good to go by then cause today was not my day.

OTFA #1

100 heats
I still don’t know what happened. I had the right attitude in, going to run my race and everything seemed fine. The race didn’t even feel bad or anything but I just wasn’t going fast. I beat by 1 and 2 hundredths a guy who’s PB is .3 worse then mine and a guy who’s PB is .5 worse then mine. The time was 11.37 but with a 3.1 tailwind which is just sad. Like if I ran how I did in Legion conditions my heat race where I eased up 20-30 meters from the line would be faster. I was on a holiday and missed a couple practices this week but I don’t see how that could make me run so bad. I’m very very very disapointed right now and hopefully tomorow in the 200s I can redeem myself.

400 heat
Not expecting much, just wanted to get a time down because of Rowland Games screwing up my 400. I ended up in lane 8 which is the lane I wanted least because my knowledge of running the race isn’t great and I could stick to what others are doing if I’m on the inside. But I ran the first 200 about as well as I could from lane 8. I was really feeling it in the last 100 and felt like giving up but until about 30 meters from the line I was keeping great form. I was 5th in my heat at 53.92 and I figured I was a 54 guy so I guess a little better then I expected.

Ya I’m still very pissed about the 100. Even with such a crappy race I missed the semis by 2 spots. I am just rediculously pissed off now and I feel at top form I could have gone as much as half a second faster in that race as rediculous as that may sound. Hopefully tomorow I’ll have good news.

Day 2

200 heats
I felt like I had nothing to lose, focused on myself only and didn’t even know who else would be in my heat till the race began. I had a solid start and took the first 50 harder then usual, but I hung back for 30 after that which I’m disapointed I did, but with 120 left I gave it all I had and finished strong other then the last 40 thereabouts where I lost my form and crawled for the end. I ran a 22.99 which is a PB for me and it’s nice to finally be under 23, which I feel is long overdue.

200 final
I made the 200 final as the last seed. I was pretty focused going despite being in lane 1  in but when they announced the names in my heat and said there were only 4 runners it seemed to throw me off and cause I knew the other 3 were more accomplished at the 200 then me. I had a crappy start and did not take the corner that hard. I was well back on the straight but didn’t have my finishing kick, I just wasn’t in the mood to run, I could hear them announce who was winning before the end and usually I don’t so I couldn’t have been concentrating very hard. I ran a disapointing 23.36 which put me last in the finals.

4x100 relay
We had a solid team going in. Not much of a field but there was 1 stacked team we were against who’s worst runner was better then our best, so we were gunning for 2nd. Our starter got passed by that stacked team even with the stagger but our 2nd runner kept somewhat with there’s and when I got the baton I felt alright, maybe a little too tense, they’re 3rd runner gained on me but because he was inside me I can’t tell really how much. I handed off the baton in 2nd and we were able to finish the way.

I still need work on how to run a good 200. I still think with the speed and conditioning I have now I can make junior national standard (22.7). I just need to work on taking the corner out harder but it’s hard because of the fear that I won’t have enough energy to finish. Once I can run a good curve and get my finish going I should take quite a bit off my PB.

Great job on the 22.99, I’ve been reading and it’s good to see you went under 23 seconds! Your 400 should be a little bit lower with your 200 speed, no? Do you run the 400 very often or is it something you are doing for other reasons? I say that because 22.99 speed should yield a mid-high 50.xx 400, and a low 51 at the minimum… But then again, you may not train for the 400 so who knows… Good work either way!

I only did the 400 to get a time for it and kinda know where I’m at. I was planning on scratching it cause I assumed I’d make the semis in the 100 but that didn’t go well at all.

I don’t train for the 400 although it seems like my coach is trying to lean we that way. I just don’t have the endurance for a race that long. We train speed endurance a lot but I’m pretty weak cardiovasculalrly, my breath always gives out before my legs. I really don’t understand my running at all though, the best part of my 100 is my finish yet my 200 is still very slow considering my 100 speed.

btw I’m racing again in a 100 tomorow and possibly a 150 or 300 as well, looking to get a nice time, at least sub 11.3, which I haven’t done since my PB, still regretting I didn’t run out my heat in the Legion prelims
