Can this replace Tempo ?

I just read something by Carl Velle on ET, it is a tempo style workout, “50yd + 10pushups x 10” with 10 secs between, progressively increasing reps, distance, etc…

Could this replace the more traditional 200m tempo workout ? (8x200)

Both are just as hard on the cardio system, and both provide the blood flushing I need the day after speed and weights, but do I really need to run those low intensity 200’s ? It’s too slow to work on technique anyway, and it’s not hard to run it too fast.
I could do the shorter distance workout in a ball court or park, instead of driving 1 hour to the stadium in a country where fuel costs almost 2 dollars per liter. (yes, no typo)

But, i’m here to work, and if an expert tells me I need to run low intensity 200-300m between speed days, i’ll use my skateboard on the highway and get to the stadium. lol.

Sure, so long as the pace is still at the required pace - and that doing 10x pushups is well within your means :stuck_out_tongue:
though 50yards might be a touch short - maybe 50m?

I can arrange 50m
Cool, i’ll do that… it’s more fun too than long tempo

:D:D

You can use any kind of distances, provided it is within the range of extensive tempo (<75%). I use anything between 30m and 800m, without or without push ups or press-ups combinaison, so your imagination is the limit for the number of workouts you can create. This said, i would limit the workout variety in order to be able to monitor the workload through the year.

Our coach has us do a similar workout at the beginning stages of the season using declining sets. For example:

6x50m,(core exercise in between each rep.)
then 2-3 min rest between sets
5x50m, 4x50, 3x50, 2x50

It’s quick and easy, keeps the heart rate up but isn’t too taxing, a good break from 200s, and you can do it anywhere. you also get a good core workout.

So ou could alter the reps etc. for whatever stage of the season you were in.

Thanks Pier ! !
That’s great Bradley, I guess I could even do something like 50m back and forth and then do the core exercise…

I do like shorter tempo intervals, but I feel the overall effect of running thos 200 is still worth it.
