BAREFOOT girl, 14, wins South African Youth 100m Title! (Faster Than The U20 Times)

Hoffman’s 20.14m highlights South African Junior Champs
Saturday 8 April 2006
Tshwane, South Africa - Jan-Petrus Hoffman and Marli Knoetze were convincing winners in Shot Put at the South Africa Junior and Youth Championships at the Pilditch Stadium (7 / 8 April).

Athletics South Africa is using the two-day event to select their team for the World Junior Championships in Bejing, China this August. Other athletes will compete at Southern Africa regional competitions in May and July.

In his final attempt Hoffman heaved the six kilo implement to a distance of 20.14 m. He improved his person best by 17cm. “Last year I made my mark at the World Youth Championships in Morocco. This time the challenge is to excel in Beijing,” says Hoffman, the World Youth Champion.

Equally impressive was Marli Knoetze (16.84) who prevailed over her perennial rivals Simone du Toit (16.26) in the junior women’s event. “I had hoped to compete at the Africa Senior Championships in Mauritus but it ends two days before the World Juniors begin. This is my last year as a junior so I do not want to miss Bejing,” says Knoetze who is the Africa junior champion.

Meanwhile Nombulelo Mkenku clinched the junior women’s 100m title . She clocked 11.72 in the semi-finals before running 11.92 seconds in the finals. Both efforts are well within the Beijing qualifier of 12.04.

“My confidence level has grown since I competed in the final at the World Youth Championships last year. If selected I hope to do the same in Bejing,” says Mkenku.

 Perhaps the biggest revelation in the 100 metres is the 14-year-old Bevin Smith. Sprinting  barefoot she won the Youth 100m title in 11.85. “I have never competed at this level and so I am very delighted,” says and excited Smith.

Later on Alvin Samuels surged with 150m to the finish to win the junior men’s 400 metres in a career best of 46.55. The  top five athletes Pieter Smith (46.61), Ruan Grobler (46.78), Willie de Beer (46.91), Tumaelo Rapiri (47.87), were inside the Bejing qualifier.

“There is nothing better in athletics than getting a chance to represent your country. I hope we get selected. It seems we may also have good  relay teams,” said Samuels.

I have seen pictures of Evette de Klerk (PB 11.09 and 22.06) running barefoot but i think it was earlier in her career. It would be very interesting to know how fast she was without spikes.
