New South Wales sprinter Kurt Mulcahy secured the sprint treble today, taking gold in the under-18 100m (10.54) and 400m (47.27). It wasn’t easy sailing for the 17-year-old who has been labelled as the next Darren Clark. After stumbling slightly in the first few strides out of the blocks in the 100m, Mulcahy retained his composure and worked into full stride. He was challenged by NSW athlete Robbie Baskin and Victorian Joshua Ross but edged away over the final 30m. Baskin held on for another fast time with 10.68, while Ross clocked 10.70 - the race aided by a +3.1 m/s wind. Victorian Chris Kangars gave the Sydney Roosters scholarship holder a run for his money in the 400m, pushing him in the final straight but the Robyn Wright-coached sprinter showed his class by drawing away to complete the sprint treble in his third PB of the weekend. Kangars secured the silver medal in 47.99.

There was a big build up to the final of the girls under-17 100 metres. Queenslander Jane Larkin and New South Wales athlete Jacinta Doyle were out for revenge after being pipped by New South Wales sprinter Olivia Tauro in the 200m final yesterday. However Tauro, and her renowned blonde pigtails spoilt the party, powering home to pick up another world youth qualifier in 11.75. Larkin (11.96) and Doyle (12.13) finishing with the silver and bronze medals. A member of the Paul Hallam stable, Tauro’s times puts her in good stead for Australian team selection for the World Youth Championships in Ostrava.

Aaron Oliver (WA) and Zac Walpole (NSW) will be athletes to watch in the future having both broken the 1998 meet record (21.97) in the under-16 200 metres. Oliver claimed the prize in 21.65, Walpole the silver in 21.77.
