ankle sprain

 While I was away, my top sprinter on the HS track team decided he wanted to try and High Jump  . Unfortunately this was disastrous. He sprained his ankle. Right now it is swollen
He has two huge meets next week and another in two weeks. He is going to the Dr today.
What type of questions should he ask? What should he listen for? What can he do to stay in releativley decent shape for the sprints?

We have short seasons so he does not have much time to lose. Please reply soon!
Thanks!!!

“your f***ed” ever come to mind?

don’t need a doctor to tell you those.
Aside from that get one of those cheap casts from the doctor(dont’ know the exact name) but that will help to keep the ankle from being used much at all. perhaps a 10 buck neopreane brace, to help from turning wrong if he does practice before the meets. Another thing i found that worked for me during the rigors of summer basketball back in the day to “set” the ankle(or at least to keep it from f*ing up again) is to sleep with an ankle brace on the ankle, call me crazy but it seemed to help me.

as for staying in shape, if he’s a 100-200meter runner just think of it as a glorified taper, have him lift upper body and ride the exercise bike(perhaps, just a thought), trying to keep him from regressing is the main idea, if the meets are in the upcoming two weeks he can only detrain so much and the ankle’s health is the no 1 priority. imo.

hope it was helpful. i’ve had alot of ankle sprains and once the grapefruit swelling goes down the ankle is ussally pretty functional you just have to be really careful not to roll it because if hurt once it has an exponetnitally higher chance of being hurt again. I saw a study on this with a large number of recrational basketball players in aussie land i wish i could remember where i found it. btw i am not a fellow coach, just a kid trying to help.

THanks
I told him to ice on and off for 15 min for the rest of the day and keep it elevated. I rolled my ankle pretty bad back in 90 the day before regionals. I ran the 100-400 an placed in all three. His championship season is not until late May so there is some recovery time. I just want to use this as an unloading phase and not a peaking period. I will utilize the weights and bike, core work.
In regards to weights, how about some iso lifts (leg curls, ext.)?
