2016 races

Your gut was right. Lyles set the new HS record though

He looked leaner and more muscle. I think his Mr.T starter kit was what weighed him down. (beard and chains)
But also snitching on Jon drummond didnt help either. lol

I figured one of them would break that record. THey will be forces in the future. Hope they follow dix’s advice

Rocket start didn’t work for me. Front block too far back–not enough leverage–but maybe if your weight numbers are down you don’t need as much leverage. I’m a lot bigger than him, but I’ve had the best results doing it just like Yohan Blake (before the injury). Notice both spikes 2-3" up on both pads and the asymetric arms with the trail arm about as tight as possible to get it back faster. He also does the both knees on the ground thing:

Having the front block further back like in the rocket start makes it easier to push and you get off the front block faster (foot is further behind COG). And usually the trade-off is that, although you can achieve lower shin angles, the angle of the knee joint is usually larger, unless you lower your hips (from where they were previously with the front block closer to the line). Although you can have a shorter block-contact-time by being further back, less force can be generated out of this position as there is less time to apply it before the knee/hip extend. However, as lkh was mentioning, this seems to make the rocket start even more advantageous for sprinters lacking strength. And also having your feet higher up on the pedals can create some artificial hip height, allowing the athlete more time to get their foot further behind their COG upon landing. So I have found that using these modifications helps with my weaker and younger kids. Of course, you have to take into consideration the effects on the torso position and everything else, but as we see, very strong athletes can use it and do very well with it too.

Here is a start where Seagrave and Mann used those modifications on an athlete

Ive have kinda combined charlies start with buds. My front pad is two shoes from the line and the back i just changed. I use to have 3 shoes back for the back block, but now I do 3 shoes and 2 fingers. Ive been working this for the last two weeks. I used to have to have both block pads in the lowest position but now I have to adjust the back pad up a notch. SOmething charlie recommended. So now I have both knees down then on set I just raise hips just until my feet are flush on both pads. My hips are much lower now as compared to before. I also notice my head, back and hips are pretty much in a straight line.

I come out feeling like I have much bigger strides as compared to before. I need to record it to make sure tho. But so far I like it.

Please do! I don’t recall seeing a nice side view of your start, at least in recent times.

My impression is that what you are using now is Charlie/John Smith block placement, not the “Rocket Start”:

I am a LOT bigger than you (6’4") and for me, 2 spike lengths is 23", which is what Bud said for the Rocket Start (23" & 33"). But for shorter sprinters (5’7"-6’0"), shoe size might be size 9-10 and 1- 1 1/2 inches shorter than mine. I think the Rocket Start placement is about 3" further back (front pad) than standard, and I think if you were to take your present block placement and move everything back 3 inches, you would find it hard to generate enough force. That’s the problem I had.

yea i did see ato teach his athletes to space like that. I said the bud winter part because the “get set” position he would have his athletes move forward into the both knees down position before raising hips. THats why I think most athletes that are doing it, just have both knees down from the start.

Not sure of the origins but thought Oregon’s Curtis Taylor was a fan of the two knees down? Maybe picked it up from Tony Wells?

Miguel Francis from Antigua and Barbuda just ran 19.67 (+0.4). It will not get ratified as a national record though, as the track is not certified.

Here is the 2015 NCAA finals with both Andre de Grasse and Trayvon Bromell. Caryl Smith-Gilbert (Andre’s coach before turning pro), like Curtis Taylor, is a disciple of Tony Wells, but neither Andre nor Trayvon have both knees down. So I don’t think it came from Tony Wells.

I do think both knees down is something worth experimenting with this summer (every millisecond counts, as Allyson Felix just found out).

It’s going to be an very exciting lead in before Brazil and series of runs in Brazil.

I guess Powel makes a bunch of money for attending these races but surely he would make more if he was winning all of the time. Who is his agent?

AP’s agent is Paul Doyle.

Powell did not qualify for the individual 100 in Rio, only as a relay alternate. This 9.92 (wind only just legal at +1.9) was his season’s best. Normally he would have run faster this time of the year.
Looks like he’s nearing the end of a very long career with over one hundred sub-10 races.
Better grab that money when it’s still on offer.

He is only 33. I was just looking him up on Wiki. It will be interesting to see how he manages the next phase of his life post 100 meter superstar. It’s kinda crazy that you ran 9.92 and you can’t cut it to go to the Olympics. WOW!

Asafa just like Dix who is only 30 are still young. IF your still making good money running why retire? that would be foolish. Id keep running and making money until my body and money says no more.

Asaffa started the season so promising too with a 6.48 indoors. He just doesn’t seem to have that burning acceleration where he used to gap the others. Change in training?

He ran 6.44 twice this year at world indoors, while easing off before the finish. Probably had a 6.40 in him.

He has stated that, in an attempt to avoid injuries, he doesn’t do as much acceleration work under his new coach anymore. He also stated that we was injured at the Jamaican trials. I’m sure he still has a mid-to-low 9.8 in him.
