Can de Grasse give Gatlin a race? We’ll get an idea in the Pan Am Games in about 10 days. If he’s not cooked by all the racing before Beijing, Jamaica might not get a medal in the men’s 100.
Asafa looked like he was driving sideways with his knees from the blocks
I think all the college athletes will be shot by then.
We’ll find out soon I think. De Grasse is running the 100m (and the 4X100?) in the Pan Ams and Bromell has to race in Monaco if he wants to be on the US 4X100 for the WC. De Grasse did not look cooked winning the Canadian 100m in a wind-legal personal best. Presumably De Grasse doesn’t have to peak for Pan Ams, so there is time for something equivalent to Charlie’s Phase III before Beijing for both of them.
Ikl…you may not realise but gatlin/gay and powell may not get the invite for London due to their strict policies regarding tests etc so bolt I playing a very smart game. top 3 guys may not be there so as you can see its a game
Don’t forget how essential the game of politics plays regarding who runs when and where and against whom.
The business of coaching, the business of being a top athlete and the business of running track meets are all intimately woven now more than ever.
I am cheering for our new and very young athlete under Mr. Tony Sharpe. It will be wonderful if he is supported well by our country and federation to realize his potential.
I think everyone knows where Gatlin, Gay, and Powell are at. It’s Bolt that nobody knows about (and he might not be willing to really put that on display anyway). But I think the issue with Gatlin is money. They’re not going to be able to put up the money for Bolt and Gatlin to race before Beijing. Gatlin is racing 100 at Monaco, and I suspect he will be doing 200 in London. Personally, I’m more interested in Andre de Grasse in Pan Ams (is he or is he not cooked after all the racing this year?), and I certainly would not be willing to pay the ticket price for London minus Asafa, Gatlin, and Gay (and Fraser-Pryce, Sherone Simpson…?).
And if it is a game, what happens if Bolt loses to Vicaut? Queen’s gambit: Even if you don’t take the pawn, you still might not win.

We won’t know if the young Mr. de Grasse is cooked or not until he runs.
We can go by some of the things we know for sure.
He has now run how many seasons best? What is his training background?
I want him to do well but I am a bit gob struck with how he has managed these times so far so consistently. Good for him and let’s cross our fingers. [/b]
It happens almost every season with the college kids. THey are running fast enough to make the teams, then they get to the big dance and cant make it out the prelim. lol
While some pro’s who got knocked out at the trials sits at home knowing he couldve atleast made the semi.

I’m sure you know the part with Tony Sharpe discovering Andre, and he runs his first 100m as 10-point from a standing start in basketball shorts and maybe not even sprint spikes. From there he went on to a junior college in Kansas in the US and transferred to the University of Southern California with Caryl Smith-Gilbert for the last season. He has only been sprinting for 3 years and has not yet built up the work capacity to handle a professional training load, which is why he is going to come back to USC for next year. Caryl is a Tony Wells disciple and has developed people like the former Tianna Madison and Dee Dee Trotter, and also this year had Beejay Lee also run sub-10 and missed the US world championship team in the 200 by 0.01, AND a college freshman female break the World Junior WR in the high hurdles in the NCAA championships. So Andre isn’t the only one, but how he got there might shock you more than anything else. This is a presentation I found that she gave 4 years ago (promise not to faint when you see the pictures of the depth jump and freeze jump setups):

At the time Caryl gave that presentation, she had Octavious Freeman as an athlete at the University of Central Florida. This is a video of the 2013 World championship women’s 4X100 final with an obviously NOT cooked Octavious Freeman running anchor. The US had no chance at gold against Jamaica because of how badly English Gardner screwed up her baton exchange. But look at where Octavious Freeman got the baton…and where she ended up:

running a 4x1 is a big difference compared to running rounds in the 100
Smith-Gilbert also developed Aurieyall Scott at UCF along with Freeman.
Freeman ran all of the rounds, competed in the final, then did in the 4X100 what you see. That is why de Grasse may be able to pull it off. But their plan is not for this year but next year, culminating in the Olympics. If it was me and I saw Beijing as a major goal, I would not be doing Pan Ams. They may be using this whole summer as an experiment, to see what he can actually handle for setting up peaking next year.
that makes sense
